Villa bid for Morgan Rogers

Because Rogers’ ceiling is higher than both of those two players. Neither will play for England, whereas Rogers has the talent to win international recognition. I love Tav but Rogers has the potential to reach the very top level imo. Tav is probably at his level now. And Spence is a waster who will never beat his one good season at Forest.
Okay Cameron archer 18 million

Rogers should not be achieving that. @BoroMart said the further up the pitch the bigger the premium. Archers ceiling is higher than Rogers, it certainly was even more so in the summer.

I’d be surprised if we would turn down a 10 million bid

The fact he’s 6 months into a 4 year deal comes into play too. We also aren’t just selling him on the player he is today, it’s the potential. We bought him for the potential so the price to sell would have to be the same reason.

I think 15 million makes us sit up and listen anything below that there is no point. He is progressing nicely and can help us achieve our goals this season whilst ultimately driving his value up more.

It isn't though. Brighton do stand in the way when a bigger club comes calling, they literally did exactly that with Caicedo when Chelsea first came calling and wouldn't budge until the Summer window rolled around and Chelsea were forced to cough up £100m. Seems to paint this idea that Brighton just lovingly roll over when a player wants to go when the reality is they negotiate just as hard as any other club. And they made Chelsea pay about £30-40m more than Cucurella should have cost. Brighton's approach isn't "sign a good young player, and then sell him so he can have a nice, lovely career". They play hard ball unless it suits them to sell I.E. Sanchez, and Trossard who De Zerbi didn't want. They're just better at identifying talent and acting quickly before they can be beaten to these players.

"Showcasing" that we can develop players only really matters to clubs looking to loan players out. It only helps actually sign a player if you're the best club trying to sign that player which is to say, it's basically irrelevant. Trying to portray ourselves as a club that will just step aside and let you go as soon as anyone better comes along is the last thing we should
want to do, and we're already soft as f*ck in the transfer market half the time as it is, basically gift wrap everyone we sell where other clubs would, and do, hold out for more.
We can play hardball too - but we will sell if the price is right, like Brighton did.

Honestly 15 million is ridiculous for Rogers. He’s shown potential here, he could be worth that or more if we keep hold of him

Based on what other players have gone for, bass on our previous sales, I don’t see how boro would knock back 10 million

I’ve always though this forum overstates the value of our players, this thread is proving that again

I do think we could achieved more for both tav and Spence though. If villa offer 10 million this window, imo he will be sold

IMO they won’t and he’ll still be in a boro shirt in feb lifting the cup 😅

I wouldn’t sell for that. What’s the point when we could get more for him in the future if he keeps playing and progressing. Just weakening ourselves in the middle of a season. I really don’t see us selling him this January tbh. Villa just trying to cause unrest.

Surely Rogers won't be pushing for anything until Wednesday when he'll know if staying at Boro means playing in a cup final at Wembley.

There is always the balance of what if he doesn’t progress on the trajectory he is on now, what if he does his cruciate. 10 million is a big deal for our club and where we operate now, I don’t think that gets bid and therefore I don’t see us selling

Players have all the power. If his head is turned, he won’t be staying here. I’m not sure what evidence we have previously to think we will play hardball. We have history at accepting relatively low bids for our players.

Well that'll teach me for not looking at transfer news before going to bed, waking up to see Villa want Rogers has certainly knocked me sideways!

I'd be gutted if we sold Rogers, I think he has a huge future ahead of him and I hoped we'd at least get a few seasons out of him before a big club came calling.

It's all well and good selling our best young players if that's the model but come the summer, especially if we don't get promoted we're seriously looking at players like Hackney, VDB, McGree and possibly Isaiah Jones all leaving which would mean yet another squad overhaul and the cycle starting all over again. At some point you have to say "No, to stand a chance of getting promoted we HAVE to hold onto our best players" although I know it's not as easy as that.

I wouldn’t blame Rogers wanting to go to Villa, but right now it doesn’t make sense. Go there during January and hardly play again all season.

Or, stay at Boro and continue playing in a competitive league every week. If he kicks on and Villa still want him in the summer then fair enough. Good luck to the lad in that scenario.

Potentially play in a cup final as well

On a lighter note, I think Unai Emery might just be a closet Wham fan, and he liked the South Stand’s version of last Christmas so much, he thought “I’ll sign that lad”.
Btw, it must be fun for any Villa fans looking at this thread from the outside, as we do when Boro are after a player from another club to gauge what their fans are thinking 🤔

I think we’ve priced most our players pretty fairly for all parties. In all cases the player wanted to go to a higher league, we’ve needed cash and the contract was running down. Price them out of the market you risk alienating the player, getting nothing when the contract runs out, alienating other clubs and agents you might need to do business with. We got large fees for Spence Tav akpom etc… I don’t think any other championship club has been able to get the kind of money in consistently

Way too many pages to read on this thread - I'm a busy man! (sorry I mean I need to act busy for 8 more hours)

It will be a massive shame if we lose him. Read his numbers last night and they are impressive on paper, 6 goals, 8 assists in all competition - that shows talent in any league, and at 21 still very much raw potential for a coach like Emry to work with.

I would not accept anything less than 10 million, and that would be with a decent chunk up front to utilise in this market if we can. Another catch for me is to make sure someone else is lined up first (unless Azaz is that man and this has been in the pipeline? ...)

You can see Villa's logic, he has had a good half season, he has been scouted around for many years due to his city links so clubs will be very much aware of him anyway. So really Villa have to move now (say for 9/10 million) otherwise risk him having an even better second half of the season, Boro get promoted and they are potentially forking out double that.

I think 90's sensation KWS sums it up perfectly;

It is ridiculous but the current market is ridiculous. £115 million for Caicedo, £35 million for Lewis Hall, £65 million for Kai Havertz.
As a comparison Bournemouth paid £25 million for Alex Scott who like Rogers had never played higher than the championship or for the England U21s, and he had a serious knee injury when they bought him.
Our last comparable sale was Tavernier but he was in his last year of his contract and it was two years ago, prices have increased significantly since then.

We need to remember we are in a position of power too - 3 years left on his contract, relatively small fee paid. So we should absolutely be playing hard ball, north end of 8-10 million for me.

The only scupper could be in Rogers himself kicks up a fuss and tells the club he wants cuddles off Dion Dublin.
