Wilder eyeing second spot

Have you seen their fixtures? He's talking out of his ar$e for 2nd place but they've got every chance of challenging us for 3rd. They've got by far the easier run in out of everyone. I can easily see them winning 8 of their last 10 matches if they get the new manager bounce.

He doesn't say that, does he?

He said Middlesbrough were 2nd in the xG table under him this season, even if results weren't 2nd in the table.

Also says he wants this season to end with him lifting the trophy at Wembley, which is clearly the play-offs.

ON HIS TARGETS

“I’ve signed to the end of the season, and I’d like our season to be ending by me walking up the steps at Wembley to get a trophy.
“I’ve got to isolate what I can affect and have an influence over in this 11-game period. I have to control the controllables.
“One thing to remember is that 11 games is very nearly a quarter of a season. People will look at the top two and think it’s done and dusted. I think top spot is, but not second place.”

I’ve never really gone in for the wholesale criticism of Wilder TBH, though obviously by the end he had to go and had burned his bridges - but reading that interview there, I realised why I stopped reading his interviews and watching press conferences when he was Boro manager.

There’s an element of cringe to it. I never really noticed it before, probably didn’t want to maybe. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about why I tuned out of those things.

But compare those quotes to what Carrick says. I much prefer Carrick’s low-key, no fuss, keep it nice and simple approach. We can talk on the pitch. A bit boring but that’s what you want. Let’s crack on with the game. No bullsh*t.

The bombast is not missed.

2nd isn't done and dusted.

Given he literally mentions lifting the play-off trophy in that same paragraph, he's clearly on about other teams.

Be interesting to see what formation he plays. He said similar about being flexible when he took over with us then insisted on sticking with 352 even when it became blindingly obvious to everyone else the midfield didn't have the legs for it.

Under the targets section of the article. Not the ‘what he thinks of the rest of the league’ section.
He’s just saying there is still a lot to play for with 11 games to play, so play offs is achievable. He’s giving 2nd place as an example but not for Watford.

Watford are currently on 51 points and have 11 games left.

If Wilder seriously thinks Watford can win all 11 games, and even after that, think that 84 points will be enough for 2nd spot, then I want whatever the hell he is smoking.

Sheff Utd are on 67 points with 33 points up for grabs....they would need to lose half of those 11 remaining games.
