Zack Steffen

So so so so so important to the way we play. He was brilliant on the ball there drawing them on. Great football brain. Was outstanding there for us.
Exactly a gk comfortable on the ball draws the cf up the pitch, plays it past him and the press is broken. The cf is out of the game and we’re 10-Vs-9 with outfield players. Yes he’s got the odd error in him, but the pros outweigh the cons.

The over the top reaction to his mistake vs Sunderland when he played the ball straight to Diallo spoke volumes.

How many times has he actually cost us a goal giving the ball away in a dangerous area?

Even Lev Yashin dropped a b*llock every now and then (probably, as he was a wee bit before my time!). Essentially every single keeper in the world has an error or two in their locker.

I agree he's massively important to our style of play and the coaching staff and Steffen himself deserve huge credit for working on and improving his vulberabilities through hard graft. Shortly after he signed I wasn't keen, but would be more than happy if we could get a permanent deal over the line for him if the costs are reasonable.

You definitely are

Yeah, he’s dreadful. People keep saying he’s important to the way we play as if he’s good with his feet, but I haven’t really seen it. Plus, as said, he’s not that great a shot-stopper.

Keepers being good with there feet is all good and well, but it’s more important to be a good goalkeeper in the old sense of what it was

He’s not particularly good with his feet though! That’s what I mean. I’m not sure where this myth has come from. He usually just eats up about half a minute then passes it 5 yards sideways. Or punts it out of play.

Are you really trying to tell me a good keeper is simply one that makes more saves than mistakes? Good heavens!
