Football has always seemed such a fringe sport for the Olympics. Often starting before the opening ceremony.I wouldn't miss football if it was dropped, but that's very unlikely given the sorts of crowds it normally attracts. If it did go I'd love to see something like 7-a-side or futsal replace it.
Think the main reason it feels so insignificant is because nearly every other football competition is bigger. World Cup, Euros, Copa America, Champions League etc. The fact it’s only u23s as well for the men severely weakens it.Football has always seemed such a fringe sport for the Olympics. I remember when the football started in 2012: North Korea played in one of the first matches at Hampden park. And they played the South Korean national anthem before. (Or was it the South Korean flag was flown?)
Imagine the Olympic experience: playing your first match before the games start, in a different country, and under the flag of a country you’re at war with. Makes you feel so welcome
It would be morally wrong to drop beach volleyballGolf. BMX, Baseball, Beach Volleyball, Football, Skateboarding.. none should be in the Olympics imo, no teamsports that's for sure.
Athletics, Swimming, Weightlifting, Gymnastics and then maybe the combat sports.
Teamsports should have no place in the Olympics imo
Beach anything.. a gold medal to show you can play with your mates in the sand?It would be morally wrong to drop beach volleyball
Don’t you dare try and get rid of beach volleyball.Beach anything.. a gold medal to show you can play with your mates in the sand?
As opposed to showing off to your mates that you can play in the water? I give you Water Polo.Beach anything.. a gold medal to show you can play with your mates in the sand?
Get it in the bin!As opposed to showing off to your mates that you can play in the water? I give you Water Polo.
Don’t they have events for horses already?Keep the horses, in fact add more events involving them. It keeps my good lady wife enthralled and allows me to get on with stuff without interference.
The only thing I dislike with a passion is swim dancing or whatever it's called
Yes, but not enough surely? I mean what about some equine swim dancing, skateboarding and wrestlingDon’t they have events for horses already?
It probably removes any sport where physical excellence is not the key, or its professional. You could argue that under your criteria boxing should be removed. The next Olympics has breakdancing and I believe Cheerleading. Sports? Meanwhile poor old squash isn't an Olympic sport. I am sure there are examples that I might struggle to fit with my criteria, but my view is that for a sport to be included, an Olympic Gold should be the pinnacle of the sport. That removes Football, Tennis, Golf for a start.
Horse dancing is not a sportThey keep adding sports , but isn’t it time ( like motor boating, I kid you not) some we’re dropped
My Choice
Dressage, medals won by family and friends of the various Olympic committees.
Got to say the horses are beautiful but it shouldn’t be in the Olympics.
I watched the beach volleyball yesterday. Barely 10 minutes in and there was a horrific wrist injury. It would be morally wrong to drop beach volleyball
Brilliant! Needs to go in the dad jokes thread that one!I watched the beach volleyball yesterday. Barely 10 minutes in and there was a horrific wrist injury.
