Would you pay for X (Twitter)?

Musk is in the papers today stating he is going to put a paywall around X and charge all users, would you pay for it? I do have a Twitter account but very rarely go on to it unless there is a link from here or a text I have been sent. I don't follow anyone or browse Twitter so think I would use an online tool to bypass the paywall if there was something I wanted to read.

I don't think I would. The second it hits a paywall I think content providers will have to look at other platforms that deliver a similar free service.

I get a lot of valuable info from twitter through academia and I think it would be a loss not to have it, but I think the people I follow would go elsewhere as they aim to reach quite a niche population and don't generate money directly from their content.

It's pretty much useless now unless you are a registered user. So if, as I did earlier, you go on to a club's Twitter feed to find the latest about a game you are going to later, you'll just get a random post from, say, 2021. And all the other posts are in random order.

His motive is either

A) Try and recoup the lost ad revenue of 2 billion he lost when he took it over or

B) Deliberately run into the ground

If it’s B then he’s doing an excellent job but if it’s A he’s been the worst businessman since Gerald Ratner.

I almost exclusively use it for football coverage, so it's not a huge loss to me if it does go under.

I wouldn't miss the idiotic comments from randomers from around the world.

Closed my account on it once Musk had opened the gateways for the return of the trolls. I find as a non-user it is sometimes impossible to even see a quoted tweet (or whatever we must call it now). Other than that I don't miss it.
