World Cup final 1966..

I’d never watched it all the way through until recently...

Absolutely awful defending and play in general. I know there’s a lot of legends of the game and they paved the way for players after and deserve respect but they wouldn’t beat today’s England under 17’s, I’m sure of that. I’d probably fancy England women’s team today to beat them.

the general standard was god awful. I know it was different conditions and balls and pitches were different etc..but even so, the intelligence on the field was poor.

I watched it during lockdown and remember being surprised at the pace of the game, was expecting it to be much slower for some reason.

Alan Ball was much better on the ball than I was expecting and in that particular game Jack Charlton looked much more composed and better than Bobby Moore

The vast majority were unfit smokers shambling around a 'pitch' that looked like the Somme kicking anyone they couldn't be arsed to run after.

PS I don’t really believe this. It was the parody spot on Fantasy Football with Badiel and Skinner - Old Football Was Rubbish.

What a stupid post. It was 55 years ago .

To be fair to the 66 team a lot are now no longer with us and the ones that are must be in their 80s, so I would fancy both the u17s and women should give them a game.
Different times, different game, more importantly different rules Pak.
Theoretical games played under those scenarios would probably end in 2 games ending with 1 win each. A bit like the rugby union v league games a few years ago.
Present squad would win easily under present day conditions and rules
Wouldn't fancy them with 60's rules wet ball playing at Baseball ground against the likes of Big Jack and Norman Hunter. Falling down and rolling over 3x gets you nowhere.

No subs, we’ve got first team players who can’t do 90 minutes in the modern game so they’d never have gotten through that. Different game, different type and levels of fitness, not even the same type of ball. Can’t compare.

That said I re-watched it a couple of years ago and it was a brilliant end to end spectacle and thoroughly entertaining.

The trouble is the 66 team can't call up Big Jack as he is no longer with us, in fact the OP would have to allow the 66 final team to call up some squad members otherwise they would struggle to get 11 to play against his U17s or women

Indeed. Most of today's pre-madona's would have been kicked into the stand in the first five minutes and that would have been that. Wasn't going to respond but that was too good to miss. It was doggy dog in those days you know.

Isn't this the troll who claimed to have switched allegiance from Boro to Man City?

Best ignored.

That last goal was impressive accuracy from Hurst. Also there seemed to be a lot of continuous play, less whistle, though I haven't counted the stoppages.

One thing I would say is that it was obvious 'game managenment' hadn't evolved into a thing at this time.

For example, Gordon Banks rushing to take a goal kick in the last minute of normal time with England 2-1 up in a World Cup Final would be seen as very naive nowadays and he would be criticised heavily.

Well I watched it live and it was the most exciting game of football ever.
Fitness and tactics get better as time goes on but this was the best there was at that time. It was a great game and I can remember my Dad lifting me out of my seat and running around the room every time we scored.
Happy days.

And no one takes more than three seconds to take a throw in. Be interesting to see time in play stats compared to today.

The rule then was that you take a Goal kick from the side the ball went out of play, any doubt and it was left to the Ref to decide which side to take it. It's the one rule I'd like to see brought back, because it is the biggest culprit in aiding and abetting time wasting.

Can you imagine today's Man City or even better Spurs playing at the Baseball ground freezing cold after a downpour. I would give them 3 start over Dave MacKays Derby side and still back Derby.

Alli would get a sprain getting off the bus.

Yes, it was still a game back then for the majority. You played to win but played the right way.
