Woody on Carraghers' 'The Greatest Game' Podcast

I'm sure one day when Dijksteel or Bola go for a few quid he will say 'I bought them'. He loaned one out and the other was poor (although injured)

He can't take much credit. The side that played last night was pretty much Woodys squad. The two teams are light and day compered to when he was in charge.

We were down after that Swansea defeat. I couldn't see us winning another game. I still hadn't got over that important 10 days were we played Wigan / Luton and Barnsley..... 1 point and didn't even have a shot at Barnsley.

I mean 'my god' he started with Rudy and Nmecha up top against Swansea🙄

I would say Warnock has changed the style and mentality in a similar amount of time Woody was in charge. Also the fact Warnock said underestimated how bad we were when he came in.....'toughest job I've ever had'. That tells you the shambles we were in.

I think it could be interesting if one day a player who played under woody came out and commented on training and tactics. I've not heard anyone have a pop as yet.

I think there’s a couple telling moments. I don’t think he blames the players that left just says any team would suffer losing those players

Clearly I think he was out of his depth. Goes on about man managers being the best (no surprise Warnock doing well then) but doesn’t talk about implementing that approach himself

also deciding he didn’t have the players to play out the back. Sacked it off after 2.5 friendlies. What about coaching the players

if I was a chairman and listened to that I don’t think I’d be picking him up as a manger

I loved him as a player when he first joined us as he was a class above.

But he was never going to succeed as a manager, not with us, and I just can't picture him doing it anywhere else. His press conferences confirmed that to me, I believe his 'nah it's lying' comments about the table will haunt him for a while.

Haven't listened to this yet but I will tonight - Carragher no doubt will have gave him an easy ride and not even questioned any of his remarks about last season.

Opinion on woody is divisive amongst the fan base, but regardless of opinion the following was the problem. And he did the job Gibson wanted him to do with a divided squad and those players who needed to leave have now gone.

1. He should never have been thrown in like he was.
2. He needed experience in his backroom staff to make it work.
3. He had far too many players in the squad even if good enough needed to move on for themselves and the sake of the club, a lot of them had become stale at the club but were on far too much money to move out. the hunger just didn't look to be there.
4. It appeared he was too pally with some players and not others.

Warnock is doing so much better with about 50% of the resources at his disposal. so the comments make no sense. if Warnock had last seasons squad would he be doing better, the answers yes.

Most of his signings now look good enough at this level, Djksteel, Bola look the payers he knew they could be.

Was he out of his depth, maybe. But mainly it was learning on the job which was the problem and never knowing and trusting his best 11 or having them available which was the downfall.

Could we have predicted the outcome i would say yes, but if he gets the opportunity again i am sure he will do far better. I'm not sure it was all Woody's fault.

Personality with the press and what came out was maybe at times too honest, passionate and naive, as he has a very strong personality and desire to win, and his anger not achieving it eat away with him the more the season went on. Control that better and i am sure it will make him a better coach in the future.

How has Warnock got 50% of the resources at his disposal.

Here’s the clip below.

I didn’t think it was possible to dislike him more than I already do, but here we are.

The bloke was just totally and utterly incompetent, out of his depth and should never have got the job.

If it wasn’t for Neil Warnock being parachuted in and salvaging the mess he left, I have no doubt whatsoever that we’d be in League One this season.

Will rightfully go down as the worst manager in MFC history.

There was an agenda against him though. Plenty of personal attack on his perceived IQ which were uncalled for

Personal attacks are totally justified. Doesn’t matter how much you hate a person name calling is not called for.

I’m not going to lie I don’t like him, think he’s thick as two short planks, never wanted him as manager, never believed in him as manager, wanted him sacked months before he was and I was absolutely delighted when he was sacked.

100% justified in my opinion.

Woodgate would struggle to spell Bob backwards.

I was 100% against the appointment, as the majority of us were. I think him saying 'it was probably 50/50' is being kind to himself, as I can't recall seeing even one person at the time thinking it would be a good appointment. Once he got the job though, I was 100% behind him, and would have absolutely loved him to be a success. How good would it have been for a local lad to take us up?

It was so evident so quickly though, that he was well out of his depth. I agree with the comment above regarding the "nah, it's lying" quote, that it will haunt him for a while, as it was a completely ridiculous and stupid thing to say. He doesn't articulate himself well at all either, and comes across very simple.

I personally don't see him as management material at all, and would be shocked if he got another managerial job.

Will give this a listen over the weekend - cheers for posting!

Yeah him thinking it was just 60/40 shows how deluded he still is.

99% of Boro fans didn’t want him as manager.

Unfortunately, Steve Gibson was in the 1%.

He’d been working at the club before becoming manager so you think he would have an idea of what players can and can’t do. To give up on a tactic after 3 friendlies would be admitting he can’t judge players strengths and weaknesses correctly, or a lack of confidence in his ability to coach them to play that way.

If anything Gibson sacking him has sort of helped him. If he stayed on for the last 8 games we would be in league 1 right now in my opinion. No idea how he can claim Gibson didn’t give him enough time. He gave him a job he never should of and then Backed him for maybe 7 or 8 games longer than he should of done. Good riddance Woodgate.

If Woody was still here we'd likely be struggling at the wrong end of League 1 rather than 4 points off the top of the Championship.

It is amusing that he uses Klopp taking a few years to win the league as an example as to why he needed more time. My memory isn't what it was but I can't seem to remember Klopp taking Liverpool to the brink of League 1.
