Womens World Cup 2023 in Oz and NZ

Englands final ball was very poor.

Will need to improve dramatically to progress any way in the tournament.

Only saw the last half hour but I thought that for a first game it went as well as you could hope. Yes, our final ball was a bit hit and hope but other than that we did well. I think Haiti are better than we might have expected, as @Boro4life said above they were pacey and strong.

I thought England were pretty sloppy in places but my sister corrected me to say "rusty" which I think is fairer.

Seen a lot better from those players. Definitely missing Williamson and Mead though.

We've lost so much of the experience that won us the Euros through injury and retirement. Williamson, Mead, Kirby and White have so much experience at the very top level. Plus Jill Scott from the bench just to calm things down towards the end of games.

They're vital players and that kind of experience isn't easy to replace in a squad. There are a lot of young players and a lot of expectation on them following the Euros. They could do with some older heads in there just to help them handle it.

But, the main thing with any games at this stage of the tournament is to get a result. Sides like Haiti are always going to be tough because they're an unknown quantity, bar a couple of players when they know all about England.

Got to start scoring from open play though.

Just watched the Danish goal against China. What a total joke. Offside player sticks boot up almost in keepers face though doesn't touch the ball or keeper and ball travels into net. Keeper was clearly unfairly distracted yet the goal stands. You can shove VAR up your @rse.

I think we'll find that the player was judged not to be in an offside position. The VAR system can only lead to a quick decision as it did there, with no need to send the referee to the monitor, if it's a factual decision such as offside position, offence inside or outside the penalty area etc.

If the player had been found by VAR to be in an offside position, the referee would have had to view the subsequent play on the monitor. That's because only the referee can make the judgement call of whether the offside-positioned player interfered with an opponent. The VAR isn't authorized to make judgement calls, only factual ones.

Quite enjoyed it so far; I think the NZ goal has probably been the highlight.

There haven't been many one-sided thrashings, which I think is a good thing. I'd like to see a few more back and forth matches though.

Every time a team has scored, they've won and no match has seen both teams score as yet. By comparison to the last men's world cup after 9 matches, 5 matches had seen both teams score, and 3 had seen a team come back from 1 down to win.

As I suspected, the player (the Danish #4) who got in the keeper's way and impacted her ability to make a save, was not in an offside position when the her team mate headed the ball.

See freeze frame below.

That doesn't look good at all. We really don't have a replacement for her either.
