Wolves looking at Spence - £5 million?

Honestly the lad has been shocking all season. Yeah he can run quick but there is always speculation around him so it’s clear he is one who is agent is always sniffing out a move. He has attributes but he has a lack of football brain and for me would never get in our best team, he may be best going to a club where he’s given chance to develop as he has a lot to work on. If we got offered 5 mill we would sell and rightly so. Would be great business in the current market and if he goes on to have a great career fairplay to him but that certainly isn’t a given. It could go either way.

Reading between the line, the current and previous manager said so didn't they?
Warnock picks him every week. I think he really likes him. Maybe he thinks calling him out in public will help him to focus. But for me Warnock doesn't seem the type to consistently select players who have a bad attitude. And Warnock will know who the scouts are coming to watch.

Spence came back from the disappointment of being released by Fulham to move from London to Teesside. It is a long way from home for a young lad. He clearly has some talent and worked hard to get his chance. He took his chance last season. Now he is in his second year, first full year as a senior, his form is a bit hot and cold. I personally think that what we are seeing from him now is his season-long loan spell, where he is sent out to gain experience and make his mistakes. He would presumably make his mistakes in League One or Two and then come back a bit wiser and with a lot more experience. But our thin squad and the impact he made meant he never went on loan, he was thrust into our senior team and expected to maintain his form. It is a big ask. How many young lads come through and slot in seamlessly whilst maintaining a high level of form? Any at all?

This time last year Fry was being hammered. Just like Spence is now. Now Fry has really matured into a very good defender who should probably go on at some point to play in the Premier League. The point is that Fry came through, looked excellent, dropped off, looked good again under Pulis, then dropped off again and is now where he should be, where they thought he would be when he was playing with us at 17, 18. Right at the heart of our defence. But he's had, what, 100/120 starts for Boro as a senior? It has taken time for him to establish himself properly. Tav is similar. Burst through, dropped off a bit, hit and miss for a bit, now he looks absolute class and we can't get the ball to him quick enough.

I think people forget it can take time for young lads to get established. Spence has talent. This is only his second season as a footballer, his first as a senior. I personally think he has had a good season and done really well for Boro since he joined the club. He makes mistakes but so does everyone else, including the senior players. There is a reason, or reasons, why we're sitting in the middle of the second tier and Djed Spence isn't it.

I'd echo this, it's obvious he doesn't always follow instructions and occasionally switches off, but that doesn't necessarily mean this is an 'attitude problem'. Plenty of young players struggle with tactical instruction, positioning, defensive play etc.

His languid style of play doesnt help him, he looks like he has a lazy body shape, if that makes sense, bit he's quick and his work-rate isnt an issue.

As a raw talent his appeal to bigger clubs is obvious - he has strengths that you can't coach into players.
I agree on body shape/style of play. Probably qualifies as 'languid'. I think some of our senior players make mistakes but don't seem to irk people in the way Spence does. I personally think the club and the coaches have done a great job with Spence and hope he continues his development. The criticism is too harsh, IMO.

What are people seeing in spence to possibly compare him to traore apart from them playing in the same position on the pitch.

In one of Traores first games against Spurs he picked the ball up in our half and burst through the middle of the park past 4 players with speed and dribbling skill I’ve never witnessed before in a boro shirt. When has spence ever done anything like that, I’m still waiting for him to beat a man and put a good cross in.

He looked like he had something about him when he broke into the team last season but hasn’t shown anything in games to back that up. Holding on to players hoping they come good is why we end up letting so many of our expensive signings leave for free, it’s happened for years! Better to cut your losses, sell and sign someone else in the hope they make a better impact

Indeedio

I said earlier in a post I thought £5m was currently a fair price with lots of add ons.

A lot of this board had little faith in Adama Traore by December 2017 (aged 21) - he had been at the Boro for 1.5 seasons without scoring and was an attacking player. I remember he came on as sub against Cardiff and gave away a poor penalty and people said get rid in their droves on here. Young players will go through bad spells and he is going through a bad spell.

As said by others if a successful Premiership manager is willing to open the bidding @ £5m, the lad must have something that make him a potential Premier League player.

Boro fans outlook..................player makes debut.............one good game - should be playing every week
two good games - build a team around him.
one bad game - never though he was any good
two bad games - get rid
It's like when we are supposedly interested in a player he is the best thing since sliced bread..........sign him on. If the deal falls through or even looks like falling through he is instantly sh!te and we could do better.

Us Boro fans are a strange lot:);):rolleyes::unsure:(y)(n):)

I agree if we were offered 5 million we would sell. But all that amounts to is one Akpom and wages plus maybe Mendes-Laings wages. You get nowt for 5 million these days. Lets stick with him speculate to accumulate. We may get more or god forbid a decent player at the end. If we get less at the end of next season so what as I said you get nowt for 5 million.

Speak for yourself - another massive inaccurate generalisation.
Spence has been awful this season and it is remarkable that some insist on seeing potential.
There may be links to Spence, but there is not a cat in hell's chance somebody will pay £5m for him right now.

Personally I hammered Spence, because he was poor, Fry different kettle of fish, I always stated he would be a decent player, and was struggling because he didn't have a pre-season and was part of a chopping and changing defence. He was also filling out still
