Will Spence be our biggest ever sale ?

Just been talking about him on talksport...

Good enough for man u or Liverpool was pretty much the conversation.
Who was talking on there? What have they seen, a few cup games, as they likely won't have seen much else?

Were they saying he could sign for Man U or Liverpool, or get in their side?

Man U have Dalot & Wan Bissaka, and don't play with wing backs and Liverpool have Trent AA and Gomez, and also don't play wing backs, so no way would he be guaranteed to be above those? It would be a waste of his time going there, as he needs games to develop.

I know Wan Bissaka probably isn't good enough for a historical Man U side, but he's usually good enough for that side, and they're 6th. He's also been called up for England but not played, and Dalot's a full international for Portugal.

I don't see what he's done to prove he could get in a Prem side, never mind one which does play with wing backs, and then be effective in it.

He's 4th on Forests player ratings, but he is younger than the three above him, so that does count for something.

I don't even think Jones could get in a top 6 side, maybe not even a top half side, and Jones is better, and looks to have a better potential to me.

And also - Spence is a problem child.

I still don’t understand how or why, as he doesn’t seem the type, but Warnock bombed him as quick as he could and Wilder obvs agreed, or we’d have had him back in January.
Warnock I'd agree with you.

As for Wilder, Djed was happier at Forest and Jones was practically undroppable by then. So he'd be brought back to largely warm the bench and provide cover in case of injury.

Not good for his morale, another full wage to pay and for what?

There's a great story behind that Andy Carroll transfer, because Chelsea paid for it.

Liverpool apparently just said to Chelsea "price for Fernando Torres is cost of Andy Carroll + £15m". Chelsea agreed to it.

So then Newcastle could quote whatever ludicrous sum came to mind, and Liverpool just went with it, because they were playing with Abramovich's / house money.

Everyone laughs at Liverpool (and rightfully so, because Carroll turned out to be an injury-prone carthorse) but actually they got the deal they wanted and it wasn't their money. And, it was quite smart, and indeed funny, transfer business to destabilise a rival by getting them to pay way over the odds for the replacement.

I also saw a Spanish doco once about the 2010 World Cup where Torres was told by the team doctors that he would end, or seriously curtail his career, if he played through injury in the tournament, he had a serious knee problem. Which he did, because he didn't want to miss out on winning the World Cup. He was unrepentant that he didn't care if he never played again as that would be his career highlight.

I always wonder how much Liverpool knew about this (Chelsea move was the January after the World Cup), and he was certainly not the same player ever again after that World Cup.

Disagree. £20 m is what we should seek. Anything less then I will be disappointed.
Nobody is paying £20m for a second choice championship Right Wing Back, when many teams at a higher level don't play with a right wing back. If they do, then great, and I'll be rubbing my hands with glee as I think it will be the first time we've ever sold a player for way more than he's worth, and worth to us.

A lot of teams play 4-2-3-1 or something like that, and the right backs are much better defenders than Spence, and they need to be. TAA gets loads of assists from back there, as do other right backs, but if you put Spence in a back 4 he looks worse (or not as effective). No team would change their formation for a potential signing from the Championship, so that goes out of the equation.

Maybe teams are looking to play Spence higher, maybe even as a right forward, but he's nowhere near as effective as the pre-existing attacking options teams have there, and it would be some assumption that he can do it. Of course, he has nowhere near the same output as Jones going forward either.

Spence could be a very, very good player, but he seems quite tied to a particular role, and there is an absolute abundance of talent in England on that side, especially in the midfield to defensive side.

I think we should be looking to ask for 15m up front (no long term payments), but must have a sell on clause, and then look to take 12m with the sell on clause. Do it early, so we have the money in the bank so we have time to find options where we need them (probably no1 striker and keeper). Last thing we want is this dragging out all summer, as this could remove our options to get who we want, which is going to be far more important than haggling over 1-3m etc.

20mill, seems reasonable given his age and the clubs interested. It would still be a bargain for those clubs, they are used to paying 35+ for a guaranteed first teamer, so for potential first teamer it's what I would expect

I can see £20m (including add ons) - his price is rising all the time. To me he has the potential to be a England Player.

" If they do, then great, and I'll be rubbing my hands with glee as I think it will be the first time we've ever sold a player for way more than he's worth, and worth to us."

See Alan Kernaghan to Man City

Seem biazzare for us to do a cut price deal when we don't need too. I still reckon Spence remains when we go up
