Problem is, at the moment we are just that - a rung on a ladder for any ambitious manager, which I suspect Wilder is. The club is an unbalanced mess which requires a lot of work, clearly. Why get your hands dirty fighting with the Director of Football and paddling around in the lower reaches of the Championship when you can take a Premier League team for more money and no one will blame you if relegation happens?
Woodgate in a lot of ways was the perfect appointment; no expectation, build slowly. Trouble is Jonny was utterly crap. Warnock too - probable last job, no sodding off when a better offer comes along. Warnock was too much "realism" though, he managed us like we are, a mid table Championship outfit on the edge of the play offs. With Wilder it was give me a pre-season, and we'll be champions.
What a mess. Maybe it needs a Grant Leadbitter type appointment, rather than Scott Parker has been promoted! He knows what to do!
