Why are People Stockpiling Toilet Paper?

family of 2 adults and 2/3+ kids will go through that in no time. We are only a couple and we buy 2x32 packs at a time just for economies of scale from the wholesalers, I wouldn’t bat an eye at someone buying two 16 roll packs in a supermarket - they’re not even the largest size packs?

As for running out, of course you can use water or a towel, or kitchen roll if you fancy blocking your bog, or you could just spend a few quid and carry on like nothing happened. Not like you’re not going to use it anyways. You could of course do any of these things now instead of using toilet paper; but most don’t because it’s a bit weird.

how long would it take a family of five to go through 32 rolls of toilet paper? Seriously? That would be way more than two weeks worth

Am I the only one who, if I had to self isolate, would order home delivery?
No.

that would be fine surely? Get them to leave it outside then you can come out and pick it up? As long as you warn the delivery driver I can’t see a problem. They wouldn’t have to touch anything in your household and you wouldn’t have to contact them.

Absurd argument. How on earth would the supermarkets deal with a 50% or 100% increase in door step deliveries bearing in mknd that drivers will go down with C-19 as much as evryone els?. Of course drivers may not be abe to afford to call in sick in which case they would be literally brininging the disease to your door with the virus all over your quinoa.

It’s not an absurd argument: I’m just saying it’s feasible.

It's not feasible though is it? Tesco can't produce more drivers and vans at the drop of a hat. They will be geared up for current demand which is <10% of groceries. So even if just another 10% of people who normally go to the shop to buy try to get door deliveries that would double the requirement for deliveries. It's just not do-able. Things don't happen by magic.

It is feasible for it to happen. You’re seem to think I was suggesting a 100% take up of home delivery. As this thread proves many people have stockpiled and won’t need to go out (for months if the bog roll argument is anything to go by)

Not overnight, but in a scenario of mass unemployment, who knows.

No I assumed another 10% of people would want home deliveries. Currently < 10% of groceries are home delivered so if even just 20% of people wanted home deliveries that would double the logistics requirements to fulfil it. I'm pretty sure Tesco et al utilise their warehouses/drivers/vans to near 100% so they would need to double the vans and drivers.

32 toilet rolls is 2.28 toilet rolls a day between 5 people, so 0.45 toilet rolls for all uses, and assuming you use toilet roll for absolutely nothing at all other than wiping an ****. Healthy bowel movements is anywhere from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. If that’s anywhere above once a day then that’s going to be running tight, have you never actually been around kids? It’s certainly not “way more” and is so far from panic buying it’s actually laughable.

Or just not using 1 ply from home bargains. 😂

factor in that lot of people are out of the house for 8 hours a day 5 days a week and kids are at school, so useage would be higher than normal as well.

but the point is this isn’t panic buying, buying 32 toilet rolls isn’t hoarding, or buying stupid volumes, it’s part of people’s normal shop. 16 rolls isn’t even the largest size that supermarkets sell. If I saw someone with two 16 packs of toilet roll in a supermarket it wouldn’t even register as unusual outside of a wave of panic buying let alone in it.

Judging by the videos of women fighting over the last jumbo pack of Andrex in a Melbourne supermarket and making sure nobody else goes near their overflowing baskets, I'm guessing it's not a normal trip to the local shop. It's the mass hysteria driving them to a hypermarket and their lack of awareness in making sure nobody else can get a roll or two.

Yes that one video defines the entire world obviously 😂 ive been to Tesco 3 times this week, the latest being today, and people are just buying things as per usual. Buying 32 toilet rolls is not unusual, you see it in shops all the time. They sell 24 packs, even 32 packs in one go. hardly anyone is “hoarding”, they’re just all shopping at once because of what’s going on.

I'm officially out of toilet roll. I've started wiping with lettuce now. I feel this is just the tip of the iceberg....
