Why are People Stockpiling Toilet Paper?

So they bought two of something, instead of one. People don't seem to understand that lots of people buying a little more is enough to empty the shelves. The whole issue, in the UK, is now dominated by people wanting to ridicule others for their reaction to it. Panicking doesn't help but neither does denial. There is clearly at least 'a bit of a problem'!
Yes but panicking makes it worse. Toilet roll gets hoarded so sensible people who don’t do it then run out. That’s pure selfishness. Buying all the hand sanitizer is much much worse. You’re helping the virus spread by denying others

I buy the largest packs of toilet roll every time, they end up much cheaper per roll and last weeks.
Nothing to do with coronavirus panic for me.

Yes loads do that including me. But he said two packs not one. The supermarkets say there isnt a supply issue but the strains on the supply chain with people buying up 3 months worth or more is causing the issue of empty shelves. And it is an issue.

What? In case of an early death? Pasta isnt going to make much difference.

But seriously the argument is not about an extra bag of pasta is it. It’s about certain individuals buying far more than they need. Not one but many. And the resellers on ebay trying to knock out loo roll at vastly inflated prices need taking down.
Is that what the argument is about though? Lots of people buying one more bag than normal can quickly lead to empty shelves.

As I say, I agree that panicking is a problem. But so are the folk (and there are lots of them) who keep saying its not a problem or whatever (ie "only the old and sick will die" as though those people dying doesn't matter). Either way, the economy will take a huge blow as well.

I’m not saying that I acknowledge it’s a problem and potentially a big one. The point is hoarding is actually exacerbating the problem. Bog roll not so much. Although it would be a shame if someone who wanted to self isolate had to go to the shop because they had ran out. Hand sanitizer yes it truly is making things worse. As I have stated before if you hoard all the hand sanitizer, others can’t access it. They might catch it and they might pass it on to you.
There honestly seems to be a lot of dumb in the world right now.

Fair enough, I haven't met anyone who is hoarding anything. All I've seen are people posting pictures of empty shelves.

Not sure what you mean? I was referring to Roofie's post about the old/sick/vulnerable and how he was 'more' bothered about them than coronavirus, but failing to acknowledge that those people are more vulnerable because of coronavirus.

Well, the customer behind me in Tesco's the other day had about 100 bog rolls. There may have been a very good reason for this, but I doubt it.

I’ve seen it in my local shop. Also I have seen the evidence of it, empty shelves in every supermarket I went in.
I genuinely HAVE ran out of hand sanitizer and now I can’t buy any. Luckily I have enough soap in the house to last a few weeks

But this is what I'm saying, not everyone is buying way more than they need, but if all or most people just buy slightly more than they would otherwise, it empties the shelves. That isn't gross selfishness on anyone's part, its just a symptom of a crisis. Doing that isn't 'stupid'. Admittedly buying 100 bog rolls is stupid or, at the very least, selfish.

Glad I got the 9 rolls of Andrex and the associated 400 extra Morrisons More points before they sold out

Perhaps toilet roll is doubling up as tissues for some? Has there been a run on Kleenex and the like?

The virus isn’t a runny nose problem. It’s a dry cough type symptom in the main.

It really IS stupid to panic buy like that. Especially as it leaves others without. Stupid and selfish.

I saw someone buying 2, 16 roll packs yesterday. I would suggest if you need 32 toilet rolls in a fortnight then you have health issues beyond a virus.

family of 2 adults and 2/3+ kids will go through that in no time. We are only a couple and we buy 2x32 packs at a time just for economies of scale from the wholesalers, I wouldn’t bat an eye at someone buying two 16 roll packs in a supermarket - they’re not even the largest size packs?

As for running out, of course you can use water or a towel, or kitchen roll if you fancy blocking your bog, or you could just spend a few quid and carry on like nothing happened. Not like you’re not going to use it anyways. You could of course do any of these things now instead of using toilet paper; but most don’t because it’s a bit weird.

My sister tells me on her latest trip to the local Aldi - the shelves containing Pasta, Beans and loo - roll were empty!
Just what is it with the public? Are they so gullible?

Thousands of our elderly and vulnerable adults die each year due to lack of adequate housing, no heating, poor nutrition and the absence of proper social care. Our armed forces veterans are deprived of high quality professional care and rehabilitation and many end up on the street and commit suicide every day.

Im more concerned about them.

As above, herd culture and a populist media who love to spread fear.
