I can understand the argument for not upsetting the applecart too much by bringing an experienced coach in to work alongside Woodgate. After all Gibson did it once before by bringing in Venables. As far as I can remember, we are the only team to have done this, there must be a reason why all other clubs replace failing managers rather than keep them on.
If a team is failing, it makes sense to bring in a new manager with no preconceptions regarding players, their attitude, tactics and team selection, a new broom, so to speak. Rumour has it that there was an argument regarding team selection between Woodgate and the coaching staff last week, if this is the case, it seems unlikely that Woody would defer to another persons opinion, whoever they were.
I think that may be why he gave that bizarre press conference last week, justifying team selection and pointing out that the youngsters weren’t the answer, I think those comments were for the benefit of Gibson and the other coaches, rather than the supporter.
