What's the maximum you'd want to see us pay for Cameron Archer?

That's not the going rate though is it for a striker of promise?
In sensible terms he's not worth £25m, but premier league transfer fees aren't sensible. We wouldn't be getting him for £10-12m
We aren’t going to spend £25m on him even with promotion IMO.

Hugely complex calculation. Lets say we sign all our players on 4 year deals, We get 120m first season income in the prem. But years n+1, n+2 and n+3 could range from 120m to 30m.

So when we sign players we need to 'gamble' on being in the prem some of those additional years.

A 28m striker would be FFP across 4 seasons, so 7m/year. Payment will also be spread to some degree. So there is a FFP and funding question. We 'could' sign 10 players for 20-30m and likely be fine financially. It all depends if Gibson wants to have a real go or play it safe
The problem is "having a real go" usually translates to expensive experienced players with, across Gibbo's tenure, a varying degree of success which seems to have diminished as the years have go on.

I'd favour a model that even if we go down, we aren't in a constant state of flux, with 15 players leaving and another 15 having to be signed.

Add 4 or 5 quality players on permanent deals, the odd inexpensive freebie and loan to pad the squad.
Then if we come down we either have ready made top end championship layers like Archer/Ramsey/Giles et al, or they've produced enough in our season in the prem to gain a move and us some profit.

I expect this to be the model we will adapt (as it seems to work). Incremental improvements to the squad for the EPL but keep hold of those players when/if relegated, giving you the best chance of going back up.

The finances of being a yo-yo club are actually pretty attractive and *should* allow us to be build a squad eventually capable of staying up.

Happy for us to get a CB and CM who've been there done it, maybe a GK. Give us a bit of experience in the spine of the team. But everyone else should be younger talent with resale value

He is on a long contract at Villa. Villa might be happy to loan him out again next season again, which would be easier to arrange than paying mega-bucks to sign him up permanently.

If we went up, we would not be able to loan in more than one player from Villa, so that would leave conundrum if we decided that we wanted both him & Ramsey. My Villa supporting friend thinks that they will not want to sell Ramsey at all. He was less clear about Archer.

I very much doubt they'd sell, would he even want to be here permanent? I am certain there would be other clubs sniffing around and I think there is little chance we would spend that on one player, regardless who it is.

Yep we would need an Andy Townsend signing. Someone with bags of premier League experience who is in their early to mid thirties. Can you still pick up players like that for a decent fee these days or are they all buggering off to america?

I think when we first got him on loan and were supposedly interested in a permanent deal, I reckon we would have been looking at a fee around £8-10m.

Are we saying his price has now doubled or even trebled, because he’s scored 6 in 12 in the championship?

Tell you don’t know anything about football without telling you don’t know anything about football
Hahaha I typed that out but thought it was a bit harsh so changed my comment but yes, he’s clearly going to be sold for more than that. It is a silly comment
we will see won’t we, the lads scored 13 championship goals, £25-30m is way too much at this moment in time.

I really like him, but I think if we’re being sensible I wouldn’t want us paying more than £10million.
Last time I saw Unai Emery and Christian Purslow (Villa CEO), neither were wearing straight jackets, so I don’t think it’ll be happening at that price any time soon, mores the pity. Gibson will sanction spending a decent whack of £M’s i’d hope, but if he were to offer that to Villa on promotion, I would expect to see the Villa negotiating team rolling around on the floor shouting “stop it, stop it, you’re killing me” 😉

If we go up (still a fairly big if at present) I think a few of our fans might be surprised at what we do pay for players.

Not saying we'll go crazy, but even since we last went up spending has skyrocketed in the prem. And we still spent £12m on a DM last time.

£50m+ (on players in total) wouldn't shock me and would still be fairly modest compared to most sides.

As said, if we did ask about signing him in January then you need to know why it was knocked back. It was either that Villa don't want to sell him or they valued him above what we could afford.
If Villa want to push on then I think they'll move for a big name striker and let Archer go on loan again. Having become integral to the way we play and being part of such a good side I'd like to think he'd jump at the chance to come back here next season.
I've no idea how much we'd have to offer for him as the transfer market just gets dafter and dafter as each season goes by.
I'd hope we are already planning for next season and our targets have been drawn up depending on which league we are in.
