What would be your lockdown (tier system) breaking point?

What wont we get back? Absolutely no way that restrictions continue any longer than what they have to, even if this government wanted to they will know full well its political suicide, but what do they even have to gain from it?
JM14 this is my point - with news of the vaccine we should be in the "end game" with a clear, communicated exit strategy. "We may need to lockdown again between X and Y but in line with vaccine deployment, we'll open up A and B etc". Same with the tiers - to date, there is no concrete commitment as to how an area can get out of a Tier. It really is stunning how compliant the population has been in my opinion.

Its feasible that future 'flu strains' or other coronaviruses will 'need to be nipped in the bud very quickly' in future. Its really not beyond the realms of possibility that the tier system becomes a permanent fixture in our lives, even if we get in and out of tier 0 on regular occasions. 77% of flu sufferers are asymptomatic, no one cared about it before but how can people ignore it now? The media certainly won't, and some people love to regurgitate what's in the media.

As I say, I'm pretty convinced the masks are here to stay too. Even after this there'll be people/media saying 'but don't spread flu around how hard is it to wear a mask' etc.

I hope I'm just being paranoid, but I think back to the last proper night out I had in March and can't help but feel it was the last night of the 'old world'.

I agree, its a ticking timebomb though.

The extension of the furlough scheme that was announced yesterday and the Welsh & NI governments saying they're going into a harsher lockdown the other side of Xmas indicates to me that our lot will follow suit.

Bear in mind the NI one is a lockdown back to the March/April levels, only supermarkets open, no sport.

What has happened this week with the Tier system has given you all the indications you need to know. Cases mainly falling or levelling off in the North but rising in the South ...............then the real panic has started.

If this government go for a NI type lockdown after Xmas I think their will actually be civil unrest.

There has to be a balance between Covid and the mental health of the nation alongside the economical impact.

All it is at the moment is reactionary politics to Covid with the tag line of 'Do you want to murder your Granny'
I wonder if the NI lockdown is partly just to stop them rioting over the possible outcomes of Brexit. Too easy to make these kind of decisions now.

The only way the government would agree to treat flu as covid has been treated is if they can make money from it. I don't see test and trace running for flu or privately owned companies taking over testing and tracing for flu.

Remember a government rules by consent, don't give your consent.

Nothings really changed for me, I still have to go to work, can still see my partner (bubble), can still see my son (childcare), still go to the gym and still go fishing.

If it got to the point where they said I couldn’t see my son or partner again I’d just ignore them. You would have to shoot me to stop me and considering my partner is police and says the same that doesn’t look very likely.

Yeah but what about 2022's novel 'panda flu' strain that starts sweeping the globe.

We have never locked down for a flu previously so why would we start now?
Also would encouraging mask wearing in public spaces if you had a cold or flu be a bad thing in the future? Probably the easiest way to reduce the spread during the winter months.

We have only had the vaccine a week though so no one really knows how quickly it can be rolled out, I’m sure in a few months time when the most vulnerable have been vaccinated we will start to see a quick relaxation of the rules

You've answered your first question with the second question you asked. My point is, this could now be 'the norm'. Is it a bad thing? Well, quite possibly, yeah. There are certainly a LOT of drawbacks.

Mask wearing when you're unwell is much different from saying lockdowns could be a possibility in flu season.

What drawbacks could there be from wearing a mask in public if you had the flu?

Why only when you have flu? 77% of flu sufferers are asymptomatic. See what I'm getting at now? The world's perspective is changing. We don't just ask Covid sufferers to wear masks. We don't just ask Covid sufferers to stay at home. The only difference is the rate of infection but wait until there's a new flu strain that appears slightly more harmful or slightly more infectious, and see how the world panics.

Would wearing masks altogether during flu season be such a bad thing especially on public transport? This is a fairly common thing in some parts of the world

Not that I think we will ever see that in this country or any sort of lock down due to flu when we have a working vaccine, same with covid when the vaccine is widespread we wont have any further restrictions.

Going back to your first post though, who benefits from continuing restrictions once the need has gone? No reason to think this goes on a second longer than it needs to

its a good point
the pessimistic view is we have locked down, amongst other reasons, to save the nhs.
a bad flu strain could, and has in the past, disrupted the nhs.
we now have a precedent for ‘saving it’.

Its not about 'who benefits', its simply a case of changing perspectives. What is it 20,000 people that die every year of flu? Will we comfortably let them die in future when we know we can potentially stop it? If we get a slightly worse flu strain in future, will the media let it go unnoticed? I doubt it.

Hopefully one thing that comes out of this is changing perspectives of illnesses like this, Im not saying for a second to lock down every winter, but in this society its acceptable to go into your work place with the flu, potentially pass it around until it reaches someone who will suffer badly from it. If that changes we possibly wont see such high numbers of flu deaths each year and some hospitals at full capacity.

Indeed, but these things come at a cost. We *could* see future lockdowns, for other problems. The virus we've seen this year is not just covid, its the media/panic virus as well.

Agree with this, I've always hated seeing people drag themselves into work, coughing and sneezing all over the place. It's surely the end of that culture now.

Some workplace absence policies wil need to be changed I think.

My breaking point is I didn’t get on my flight today to come back to the uk for Christmas and new year, Mrs Flash went back a couple of weeks ago and when I spoke to her last night she said ’stay there this is schyte, I’m coming back’

The tier and lockdown sy.stems are to support the NHS so they don’t get overloaded - but there are less people in hospital now than this time last year, why weren’t we locked down last year. So the system is already being abused by the government. They’ve got themselves into this system of micro controlling everything and they don’t know how to get out of it.
Interestingly I was due to fly back yesterday, but jacked it off. I had filled the immigration form in online (and annoyingly ordered a test) Got a call today from the government on my mobile, asking if I was isolating at home. I said no I hadn’t travelled in the end. He said no problem, I’ll cross you off the list so you don’t get bothered again.

system’s foolproof 😂😂
