What was your favourite game at Ayresome Park?

went from 1969 to the end :( and many stand out, v West Ham 2-1 with the Downing diving header, V Newcastle and the Baird Donkeys Ears to Kevin Scott, loads of play off games , seemed special nights, but number 1 is the mcIlmoyle match v QPR , been 2 down in 15 mins we thought we were in for a drubbing, QPR had many name players at the time and they were from London, so big time charlies.... Big John and Hughie murdered them once we got out of the shock, total dominated the remainder of the match and the atmosphere electric as the goals pounded in leading up to 3-2... after that the other 3 were icing

Some great games listed above 👍

Its hard to choose a favourite but the most memorable for me win, lose or draw were those handful of capacity crowd matches 1974/75 season watching Big Jack’s superb team with 40,000 (officially!) in Ayresome Park.

The atmosphere made the hairs on the back of your kneck stand up.

Boxing Day 1973. Boro 2 Sunderland 1. Full house, heading for a draw and then Stuey Boam got the winner in the 88th minute. I was in the Holgate End and it went nuts. Complete strangers hugging each other for joy. I'd been going to matches since 1963 but this was the first time I'd ever managed to drag my Dad along with me. I even bought the Gazette photo of the winning goal which adorned my notice board in my University room for the rest of my time there. Closely followed by the Oxford match in 1967 and of course, knocking Man U out of the FA Cup in January 1971, freezing cold night, snow covered pitch, orange ball and all, packed Ayresome Park under floodlights. Magical!
I was in the Clive Rd for that Sunderland match, and complete strangers were hugging each other there as well. Fantastic atmosphere at that match.

I don't remember the early games I went to much as I was about 7 years old. The one that sticks out is the League Cup Semi Final against Manchester United. Ayresome Park was packed and I seem to remember a decent game even if it did finish 0-0. Was that about 1992?

That game against Leeds. They were Football League champions, not Premier League. They've never won the Premier League.

Redwurzel, correct! To still be imprinted on so many people’s minds does demonstrate the enormity of the occasion- it was some night! The amount of people trying to squeeze into the ground was something very rarely seen. It is such a shame no footage of the event isn’t around for younger fans to see what the fuss was about!

The one for me is the second leg of of play-off semi final v a very handy Bradford side.

The tension, the sheer will to win and a performance from Gary Hamilton that was simply sensational.

The fans and the team were connected that night in a way rarely seen these days.

strangely enough the one is always remember was getting pumped 4-2 at home to Derby in the promotion season in 1995. we were 3 down at half time but brought it back to 3-2. first match where i started at the back of the stand and ended up about 50 foot away after the 2nd went in, the atmosphere was unreal. Gabbiadini scored a hattrick

Every game at Ayresome Park was special in their own way. In hindsight, even the defeats.

Some great games mentioned already, I am going to go left field and say Boro 2-0 versus Burnley (also challengers) in March 1975. Foggon and Murdoch scored.

My reasoning is because that win put us 4th in Division 1, 2 points behind leaders Liverpool with Derby and Liverpool to come at home and easier away games at Coventry, Wolves and Leicester (2pts for a win in them days). The title was therefore in our own hands, it became ours to lose. The win over Burnley convinced me we really could win the league with only 5 games left, surely destiny was calling (not the one from Capt. Scarlet). I was rubbing all the Leeds fans noses in it at School for a week till Derby and Kevin Hector came a calling. A terrible backpass late on in our next game against Derby really derailed us. We went on to beat Liverpool too. That late Kevin Hector equaliser, handed on a plate by Stuey Boam though truly knocked the stuffing out of us sadly.

The atmosphere always seemed better at night for big occasions but the 4-1 against Newcastle in 1990 was just as good, Ian Baird's second goal is one of my all time favorites too.
