What vinyl have you bought recently / dusting off for a play?

Interested in people's thoughts on phono stages - am going to demo some setups soon, but have seen various price points for phono stages/preamps.

For example project do a fairly cheap one for £50 or so, and many amplifiers have built in phono stages. Then rega / Graham slee and others do some mm/mc ones at around £200, and then there's stuff like Rega aria which is £1,100 or Graham slee accession similar price point

Do you get a noticeable jump in quality at those points?

I used to just use my receiver for playing music but got a lyngdorf stereo amplifier which drastically improved everything accross HT, music etc and that wasn't cheap, but a phono preamp would only be for the turntable and while I'm not adverse to shelling out for quality, I'm trying to anticipate just how big that quality jump is for such a big price jump. At the same time I don't want to have decent speakers, decent amplified, decent turntable and a cheap phono preamp as a weak point in the chain

I'm looking at pairing it with Rega p6 with Ania or Ania pro most likely
I think you need to go and talk to someone at a HiFi shop about that.

😂

Yeah I'be got a demo sorted, just wanting to set expectations in advance. When I got my lyngdorf stereo amp to home demo I expected it to be a snake oil sort of improvement or very incremental so was surprised (and financially gutted) that it made such a vast improvement. Just trying to understand in advance if I should be steeling myself for wanting the Rega aria for example or if a fono is 96% as good and the extra pays for that small upgrade

Quality packaging and the record itself looks great

Got "Born To Die" by Lana Del Rey, and "Disintegration" by The Cure on vinyl this week. Looking forward to giving them both a spin soon.

I'm interested in what your thoughts are after you do a demo. I've got a P6 with an Ania Pro and the Rega MC phono stage and it's great but I'm seriously interested in how much of a difference a better phono stage makes. At some point I'll go to Hifi Sound and find out for myself.

Love my system though as it stands but the phono stage is definitely the cheapest part of it.

collect 60s 45s and I love soul. In Cornwall I bagged two rare acetates. One is a radio Luxembourg one off. I’ve checked and only 11 exist. They were made to promote on the shows. If it was well received then they’d actually make it onto vinyl. This didn’t, I love the history and the strange fact only I have the actual recording. I also found a one off acetate of a soul/funk 45 by Sonny Ross, a rare Detroit soul 45 from the early 60s and also a one off blue vinyl recording by the Teardrops. I tracked the drummer down and he said only one was made for the label owner. Considering the black vinyl copy goes for £150 this is priceless to me. All fun of the hunt. Oh, nearly forgot as I was uploading the photos. Another rarity, a Jerry Butler test press. The two sides of this do not match any 45 release he had. I’m wondering if it was for a radio station of a later release that wasn’t put out.

I’ve just scored a few 45s for the jukebox this week which I’ve been searching for a while:
‘Even Flow’ Pearl Jam
‘It’s All Right’ The Impressions
‘Out On The Floor/The In Crowd’: Dobie Gray
‘I Got To Find Me Somebody’: The Vel-vets

I'll let you know, that's exactly my concern too. My speakers are ok (focal aria 926), my stereo amplifier is decent (lyngdorf tdai-1120) but my turntable is only a £299 fluance rt-82 and if I upgrade that, that leaves the phono stage looking fairly cheap but I'm ok with that if £900 more only gets you 5% inprovement, especially as it only works for the turntable and not the rest of the system. Money spent on speakers, amp etc benefits everything else.

I've a Rega Elex-R amp and Proac Response D2d speakers. I spent three full days at the dealer checking out speakers before making my upgrade purchase!

After years of non playing and hating Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, I have given it another chance. I played side 2 as that stuck with me as being the worst side as Rebel Rebel on side one was the only track I liked. I was surprised that after all these years, I still hate it despite all the 😲 emojis from some on here, but Rebel Rebel, is still 😍 by me.

That's Hifi Sounds isn't it?

My speakers were the last I upgraded. I had a pair of Elac Debut b5.2's which cost £300 when I bought them and they were great. Even the night before I upgraded I was thinking did I need to do it? So on the final day of listening I took them along and played my demo music through them followed by my short list of approx another 7 pair of speakers and every other pair was far better than the speakers I started with. The ProAc's for me though we're head and shoulders better than anything else I was comparing with.

About a week later they'd got some £25000 speakers setup for a demo and said I'd love to hear them just to hear how good they were but thought better of it 😂

I'm always looking out for bargains vinyl wise and over the last few days from Amazon I've got:

Leonard Cohen - Songs From a Room (£8.75)
Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope (£14.02)
Worriers - Trust Your Gut (£15.81)

The Worriers album is great, a new release a couple of months back and their second of the year. I should add them into the new music thread.

I've also received the new Ist Ist live album. All those waiting to be cleaned before playing.
