What is the actual aim this season?

We are 10 points off the top and 8 points off second, the team in second place has a game in hand and has had 2 points deducted. This is after only 20 league games. If this is replicated over the next 20 games we are 20 points off the top and at least 16 off second.

We have lost a third of our games and have conceded 25 goals, the second-worst in the top 10.

We are supposed to be ‘having a go’ at the top two but to me we look miles off it. It will come across as negative and I suppose it is tbh but we were supposed to be competing for automatic promotion.

Our ambitions have been downscaled since the end of September and I don’t like it. We are supposed to be better than this. The whole season was geared around it. We were not supposed to be pinching 5th or 6th place, at a push.

It would be interesting to know how Gibson is feeling right now. Gibson will stick with Carrick as long as we're in the play-offs or just outside them, and rightly so, but I do wonder whether Gibson is feeling disappointed that we're not closer to the top two.

Carrick was pretty much given a free pass last season because of the injury crisis but that won't be the case this season. If we fail to make the play-offs I think Gibson will have a long hard think.

Who said that? The club? I may have missed that

He rang me after tonight's match and told me he'll "send the boys" if we drop points on Saturday.

My ass is on the line.

I’ve been of the opinion that any less than 4th or play off failure means he has to go. He will have had 3 years then. We will sell some assets and a new deserves some cash to tinker with.

Promotion is the aim ultimately, the play-offs are still achievable.

I doubt we've started this season as well as the club hoped, even if we do manage to hold on to the top 6 after tomorrow night, fighting for automatic promotion was clearly the target and we're almost definitely not going to get that, but there's nothing stopping us finishing 3-6th if we cut out the errors and beat the teams we should be beating.

The aim is the same every season. To finish as high up the table as possible. If we accept that this is what we are (and have been for 15 seasons), without sacking manager after manager, we will eventually finish top 6 and come up via the play-offs, or maybe even catch a big wave and sneak into the top 2 (but we should never expect it).

Not sure I agree that we were “aiming” for top 2 this season, as if it was some kind of minimum. It’s the aim for every club in this division in theory.

We will get the play offs and finish above Sunderland is my opinion I've held for a long time. They may sneak in too.

Whether he win them, who knows. But that is the aim.

Realisation sets in, it's now how do we give ourselves the best chance in the play offs.
We are well.behind leeds in physicality.

Down to you recruitment team and Gibson, January we need to strengthen.

Aiming for the playoffs is aiming for failure so I don't believe the club were aiming for anything other than the autos. The teams good enough to be in the autos, even those that just miss out, are better than the teams good enough for the playoffs and usually win the playoffs. Scraping in to 5th or 6th is in the majority of cases no different to finishing 7th.

The championship is crazy. A side like us should genuinely believe we can beat anyone and go on a mad run. There are no world beaters in this league, ( if they were they wouldn't be in the championship). Our aim should therefore be to win every game and be surprised if we don't. It's what makes this league so fascinating.
When you're in the Prem there are 6-8 teams that you genuinely feel you'll get thumped by , no matter whether you play to your potential or not.
When we are on our A game I don't think there's a better side in this division, but lack of consistency is what plagues us and is what seperates mediocre sides from the excellent.
In answer to the question we should always aim to win the league, but realistically be happy if we make the playoffs.

That's one positive tonight, they didn't win.

6 points behind them and they've got really some really tricky games coming up, so hopefully we will be above them soon enough.

The team isnt good enough for promotion theres 4 or 5 of our players who started tonight who wouldn't even make the leeds squad
