What is Israel trying to achieve?

The RW policy of Netanyahu is to show force so that no neighbouring country ever threatens them again. It's a shock and awe tactic. Will it work? I am convinced it wont but they see it as the best way to deal with the situation. He's now committed to going after Hezbollah's backers Iran. A very very dangerous escalation.

I think the premise of the question is wrong - only because I don’t think the actions of Netanyahu is reflective of the nation politically. The wars are being waged by Netanyahu and a small number of RW colleagues.

What do they want? Netanyahu wants to stay out of jail. Gaza is dying down so he’s started a new war. Once that starts to quiet down I presume he’ll start another.

My opinion is that israel want to achieve the complete decapitation of both Hamas and Hezbollah as functioning organisations and if possible Iran to be dragged into a conflict with them and allies resulting in regime change in Iran.

Not saying it is right just an opinion on their aims.

All his tactics will achieve is a growing support for his enemies.
There will be growing local extremism within the neighbouring countries.
There will be more worldwide outrage at Israel's actions and their worldwide support will decrease.

Exactly. He’s just creating the next 2 generations of neighbouring Arab terrorists. Bigger and more angry groups in the making. Ensuring Israel gets attacked for decades to come. Idiotic.

Trying to get rid of their enemies that pose a genuine threat to them.
But in doing so they are hurting and killing so many innocent civilians that they risk gaining loads of brand new enemies with every bomb dropped and every bullet fired.
There will be no winners in this conflict.

Their current government, which isn't representative of all of them, but I'd say:

Securing their northern border against Lebanon and making it harder for the likes of Hezbollah to directly target Israeli populated areas.

Illegally annexing more land in the West Bank, committing ethnic cleansing and creating an untenable living situation to try and force out as many Palestinians there as they can in the process.

Likewise in Gaza, I think there's a deliberate effort to try and reduce the population there as much as possible, whether it be through starvation or emigration.

I think in the case of the West Bank, they're trying to take as much as they can before a final settlement and two state solution, with a facts on the ground situation.

The main 'achievement' is surely reiterating their position of a guaranteed disproportionate response to threats against their state.

I agree with the above comment about fuelling future generations, so perhaps the Israeli government view is that they would prefer to live with sustained conflict in the future rather than take the gamble of being toppled in the present if they back off and watch their opponents gather strength.
