What happens when you die?

Time doesn’t really exist though does it? It’s a measurement system designed around one rotation of the earth around the sun. So saying time will go on and on doesn’t really mean anything. You exist or you don’t.
Time does exist, the fabric of the universe is space-time which is a curved field. Gravity is a direct consequence of the existence of space AND time. There is no gravitational field within space and time as Newton proposed, because space-time IS the gravitational field

However, yes there is a case that time as experienced by human senses is a convenient illusion that it is not anything like the underlying phenomena of time i.e the thing that prevents thermal reactions from ever running backwards

Well, that’s told me!

The latest thinking in quantum mechanics is that time is an illusion and space - time is a construct that makes relativity work.

A fair number of quantum physicists now believe the universe is timeless and time doesn't exist.

It screws up the 2nd law of thermo dynamics mind.

Is anyone else’s head spinning with this stuff? Intriguing thread though have to admit I have very little understanding of the physics.

Weegord science is fascinating. As soon as I retire I am off to do my second degree in physics. I may even get loans given my first degree was a long time ago. I will never have to pay the loans back because I am retired... Cunning plan

I quite like the idea that time could be a "fixed" dimension like the spatial dimensions and so the past, present and future all exist simultaneously. So when you die you still exist in the appropriate time frame.

The concept of time fascinates me, I wonder whether we all experience it slightly differently? For example the best footballers seem to have more time on the ball, in fact all great sportspeople have more time. Maybe they really do as time moves slightly more slowly to them??

Well we do know that time changes with velocity and mass and you can physically see the difference in einstiens ping ping thought experiment. A theory that was proved a few years ago. It's not just the apparent passage of time, watches run slower too. Any watch.

Me too, which is why I love the film Interstellar so much - the fact that time can be fliud and not fixed makes your head hurt if you think about it too much.

The 'afterlife' is a question that draws in the whole concept of biological life, where did it start, how and are we alone in the Universe. Its the most fundamental existential question and one that is both exciting and terrifying at the same time.

This thread - particularly red_harrington's mention of the worm story - reminded me of this beauty. Gay Byrne looks utterly appalled!

What a guy! Think his best quote when talking of such things as “Regicide”, i.e. the killing of a king, said Countryside was the killing of Piers Morgan......now that’s magic!

Quite. Having read all his autobiographies to date, he's quite a messed up fella emotionally and has gotten himself into some right scrapes in the past, but if anyone's going to get on the other side of a debate with him, they'd better be on their game. He's read and digested more thick books than are on the shelves of Middlesbrough central library and has an enormous intellect. His brain must never stop ticking over.

He also has the skill of explaining subjects in an interesting and compelling manner. I have a keen interest in Roman history but never had any interest in Greek mythology but his trilogy of books bought the topic to life for me and has piqued my interest in an area I never had the slightest interest in before.

The really bad thing about dying is that you don't know it has happened because there is ................. nothing and you are part of it ....... nothing !

Great discussion on here. For a sense of perspective; there's 7 billion people on this planet and the beliefs of mostly white blokes from a place called England will be very different to billions elsewhere.

Life is so random that I don't think it's a simple case of you life, die and that's it. I've also personally experienced what can only be described as paranormal activity that really does make you question things. I do accept that people would out up arguments against that and that's fair enough. I know what I experienced though.
