What do you consider a good salary?

Must be a pretty affluent board if you're talking £50k as only 'decent'.

I thought I was fairly comfortable on a lot less than that but now I feel like a poor relation.

Who was that Harry Enfield character? "I'm considerably richer than you are"

Not my intention, not speaking about my earnings more trying to point out much of a disaster inflation has been and gauge what numbers are considered good because I genuinely have no idea anymore

Only 10% of earners in the UK earn more than £70k - so £75k is much better than a base. Unless a base is a second home.

I earn £70k in London. My wife similar and we do alright. One child in nursery.

Edit: 70k not 79!

You deserve more than that my man, not an easy job
Hospitality is brutal, and I respect anyone that does it, for my mind and body I just can't do it anymore. Last year we broke their sales record, we did over £4k in one day and did a 14 hour shift, just got a thanks that was it.

All depends on what your out goings are and how you spend your spare cash.

I have 2 kids living at home, rent free.

18 year old daughter, at college, works part time, earns approx £200 per week. Pays for her own driving lessons, saving for a car. Doesn't go out much.

24 year old son, bricklayer, earns £200 per day cash in hand. Only outgoings are for his daughter. He has no savings, no car and is lending money off me every Monday. Not sure what his vice is, and I don't want to know
😀.
If hes on that much you need to be taking lodge otherwise he will never leave 😉

£75k is more than a decent salary… even as the only income in a house…

Way above average…

The thing is, what ever you earn you end up living to that level unless you’re a miser..

10 years ago off shore I earned six figures for just over a year before I got made redundant as the industry crashed… I went onto a 3rd of that and almost went under… I’m no where near earning that again but I’m comfortable… £75k would be great but I’m not going to get that again before I retire… wouldn’t want the stress that figure comes with…

Just out of curiosity. How would you say the cost of living in London compares to Middlesbrough for example? A 70k salary in Middlesbrough I would regard as a fantastic wage and I think a very small percentage of people in the town will earn that amount or more. However with the cost of living being higher in London, would that be the equivalent of earning say 50k (combined household income of 100k) in Middlesbrough? I don't know anyone who lives down that way so interested to see how it compares.

I’d say that once above about 30k it depends on entirely your circumstances.
I’m a DINKY, with salary slighter lower than a lot of people I know. The other half earns similar to me, we don’t have a ridiculous mortgage, we don’t have any debt and we don’t really have any expensive hobbies.

I get the impression we’re more comfortable than some of our friends earning double.

If he's going through £200 a day, he might have more than 1 vice and you probably don't want to know about any of them.

Yes guys please try to keep your own earnings out of the equation think of it more like what is now a good salary comparable to 2010-2015-2020 if that makes sense.

For instance if you were earning 30k in 2020 to be have the same spending power in 2023 you'd need 38k
