What do you consider a good salary?

1st week mate I'm still learning... Fortunately several posters got the brief.

I was sticking up for the people on this thread that have felt bad because others are alright jacking but you craic on.

To be honest I can't believe it's got to nearly a double ton.
People love an opportunity to humble brag so I'm not surprised.

Anyway, this massive lawn of mine isn't going to cut itself so I'll have to dig the ride on out of the triple garage and crack on with getting the grass cut #1st world problems

Yeah and when we have a thread entitled "Will we sign anyone before the Millwall game?" we should only answer yes or no.

You're "sticking up for people" because your clumsily worded original post meant that people didn't answer the question in exactly the way you wanted.

If you were doing that well you’d have a gardener who’d be doing it for you 😉

also down to Tax code and country.

I'm in the Netherlands so I pay a higher tax, plus a separate fee of 140 euro a month for Health insurance.

for the same salary in the UK, I am over 1k/month worse off here.

However, If I become unemployed I am eligible for the maximum unemployment benefit - 2300 Euro a month after tax; which I can claim based on how long I have been contributing taxes (1year=1month), plus if I have a health issue; getting from the GP stage to having surgery/ specialist treatment is measured in weeks rather than months.

This is a great example of how money isn't everything, because I imagine the quality of life in general in the Netherlands is better because of these kinds of policies/benefits

I think that it is, but politicians tend to screw up everywhere! you just don't have the same amount of outright lies and corruption

Your responses are starting to seem more and more flawed as you argue yourself into a corner.

1. Who are you "sticking up for"? Have they asked you in here or have they messaged you privately? Or are you unhappy with the thread you have created but not wanting to admit it's you getting upset?

2. You have since said you wanted people to just post numbers etc. BUT if lots of us did just post responses like "£50k and above is good" or "You need £40k+ or you will struggle etc" like you have since asked for, wouldn't these same people you are "sticking up for" still be upset if they are earning below these numbers? How could we possibly have answered your question at all without making some people feel they don't earn enough?

You have to accept that no matter how anybody responded with their answer (whether they fit your rules or not) people will always earn more and people will always earn less than the answers given/popular answers. In essence, you chose to create a thread asking a question that will always upset some and not others. Why now start blaming others when all they have done is answer your question?

I literally just stuck up for the people who said they felt embarrassed and shamed by others quoting big salaries and lifestyles @Support Your Local Team. I'm only responding at all because you and lizard keep quoting me directly.

I've provided 0 judgement on anyone in terms of what they earn, I don't know why you're so upset really putting massive responses out there, your lifestyle which you described sounds average Joe to me, I certainly wouldn't suggest you were lauding it up.

At no point have I ever lauded anything up about my lifestyle as it is MY lifestyle and have no interest in what others think about it. I used mine as an example of how I am perfectly happy despite earning less than what somebody else (YOU) described as a "decent base" salary in your very first post. I was pointing out that even earning less than what others describe as "decent" can still be very, very happy IF it is what makes you happy ie. it is all about individual lifestyles and there will be no simple answer to such a complex question.

In the many posts since a number of us have tried to endlessly use further examples of how earning less than what you call "decent" is fine as they are so many variables that make this such a complex question to answer.

But then you have repeatedly berated people for trying to do that as they didn't just give a number and keep quiet as you have since repeatedly said is what you want/your rules for the post are.

You say you are "sticking up for people" by attacking posters like me (who you say are "lauding things up") even though they individually themselves earn less than the initial "decent" figure that YOU posted in your very first post i.e. you are "defending" people from posters who were themselves pointing out that earning less than YOUR initial benchmark is fine. It's ridiculous.

And above all you claim that people are making others "feel bad" for posting numbers in their answers when you repeatedly insist they post those said numbers. Even in some posts mocking some responders and their ability to read accurately when you seem to have zero understanding of how confused and contradictory almost everything you have done in the thread is.

You really are quite something and I agree it's not worth discussing further at all.

I am lucky enough to earn above average and a few years ago we managed to pay off the mortgage so in theory my wife and I are pretty comfortable . The big sword hanging over my head is being made redundant as we’ve recently seen a spate of it happening at the higher level . I’ve just hit 50 and so too early to retire for sure but my personal stress is not how much I currently earn but what if it’s taken away and as a 50 year old fella how on earth am I going to get a new job in the north east, on anything like what I was on or doing a thing like I am doing now …. I’ve never had this worry before as I’ve been in this company for 15 years and it’s much more stressful than I imagined . The thought of having to step right back and impact on morale , confidence , well being is something that’s right outside my comfort zone .
