what book are you reading ?

anyone read the George MacDonald Fraser books -Flashman (and the associated titles) ?

I read those 40 years go, most entertaining read

I've read a few. Wonderful they are. As anti-heroes go, Flashman is right up there.

I keep meaning to read 'Quartered Safe Out Here', his memoir of his time in Burma during WW2. It's highly recommended by James Holland and Al Murray, who read an extract on their We Have Ways Of Making You Talk podcast over Christmas.

There is a very good book by Ted C. Fishman called 'China Inc' - it opens up the capitalist battles between USA and Communist China - and explains how and why China changed direction.
That's for the suggestion.

Reading a book about a lady with autism and its an explanation of how she reacts to different things. My daughter as Aspergers, so its a learning curve for me to try and understand her better. Pretty eye opening stuff.

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still.

And listened more deeply.

Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed.

And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.”

Is it any good ? I might have to look at that , I’ve got my own ideas on our educational system .
Having your own ideas about anything, but particularly the education system, is very dangerous. You should have a look at my book, Zero Tolerance - it's all about the current situation in UK schools. Hopefully, its funnier and more engaging than that description makes it sound. More details on the link below:

It's very good. The TL/DR version is that our education system is very inefficient at inculcating real understanding and useful skills, but moderately effective as a 'sorting hat', selecting for a combination of cognitive ability, conscientiousness and conformity. It does this in an exceptionally wasteful way. Caplan is an economics professor at George Mason University but, although plenty of research is referenced, he writes in a concise and amusing style for the lay reader.

That is an excellent read Bombero. Should keep you smiling through the current grimness. I've just finished "False Value" the latest in Ben Aaranovitch's "Rivers of London" series, which I quite enjoyed. More through familiarity than anything else I suspect. I'm currently struggling with Christopher Brookmyre's "Fallen Angel" then planning on diving back into "100 Years of Solitude" and "Moby d*ck". Bring on this isolation malarkey.

If anyone wants to try out Audible they give you a free credit. You can get 5 credits on ebay for about £12 as well. I used to read a lot of books and had a huge book collection, but as with all things I went digital and to be honest, didnt really miss the paper books and prefer having a library of hundreds of titles to take with me.

I rarely get time for even that now as I have commute of 1 hour 25 mins each way, so hammer the audio books for about 4 hours a day. fly through them, and while it took me about 2 years to actually start using audible, Ive worked through about 100 titles on there so far. Currently listening to red rising, the second trilogy.

Now then rk. Mumbo Jumbo's good,I was going to go with Michael Portillo by Michael Gove but i resisted surprisingly, and am giving Mr Wheen a re-run.

Hope your good mate,i will check out some of those reads your on. Hi to Zoe.

I always smile at the thought of Michael Portillo when he was in a Middlesbrough foundry and they got him to cast "The Portillo Carrot Flange". I ended up on his train to Darlo and hence his programme that day. Happily to pass on your regards to Zoe and Tallulah.
