That is actually true for me - although it was a black and white test screen. I lived next door to the rear delivery door of a Rediffusion depot that fronted Newport Road - this was back in the early 50s. One of the kinder warehouse men would put on a TV that sat at the bottom of the steps and we kids would sit and watch it. Of course there were no daytime programmes then, so this is what we watched.
We got a b/w TV in '58 and the Lone Ranger was the first thing I remember watching.
