Well Done Ben

As I said, do a bit of reading.
The point is this - Freeport’s have been a success and a failure - Canary Wharf and Singapore are some examples of success- and I’m sure you can give me ten examples of Freeport’s that have failed.what you cannot do is categorically say that this Freeport will fail without giving it time to play out. It so Ly your opinion that it will fail because others have - it’s not yet fact.

I didn’t say anything about it failing. I’m not comparing it to other Freeports. I’m simply telling you that the benefits of Freeports as stated by Houchen and lapped up by the electorate objectively don’t ever happen. They certainly benefit some people, just not the ones that you believe.

It’s a white elephant. It’s not an opinion, it’s not because it’s Tory policy and I’d be saying precisely the same no matter who were peddling it.

So yes, it’s a fact.

My economics teacher told me that Canary Wharf was a white elephant he was also wrong, you really do need to work in your definition of facts!

I’m concerned looking at today’s election results coming through that the wider country is already modernising beyond Brexit and the Tories.
I do hope so. Whether that is in Labour's direction though is another thing isn't it. SK and AB are certainly popular mayors of their respective cities and need to take the lead from Starmer imho.

It's crazy to think it but most of the "farmyard animal in a red rosette" types left on Teesside seem to survive on FMTTM.

Houchen could pave the streets of Boro with gold and they would still turn their noses up. More fool them as they are in an ever-shrinking minority.
It would be nice to find the streets paved with gold, but there is not the slightest bit of evidence of that happening. I will be absolutely delighted if it does.

The fact that you think Canary Wharf was a success and that it be fitted London speaks volumes. More than any argument that I could advance. As I said you should perhaps do a bit of reading. I can explain it to you but I can’t understand it for you.

Are we talking about the same place -

Canary Wharf Group celebrates thirty years as developer and custodian of the world-renowned Canary Wharf estate, which has turned the Docklands area of East London into a thriving business, residential and retail hub where 120,000 people work. The report, based on analysis produced by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), lays out the significant benefits that its regeneration of the former docklands has delivered for the local community and economy.

'Stop with the facts, if you're not of my opinion you need to read a few more books pal '

Anyone that thinks the Treasury is moving to Darlington is barking mad.
I know someone who works in Whitehall and has a nice house for sale in Darlington.
They approached the Treasury offering it up for relocation packages that the Treasury would have to offer to tempt the very Senior Management up here. They just laughed at him
Aside from a few zero hour contracts added to the Darlington payroll NOTHING will change.

I don't know if the new economic and busines developments of the last 2 years will be a success or not, but I want the area to have a good go at stopping the economic decline of the last 40 years.

The TeesValley freeport is more than a standard freeport. The standard freeport operates like a duty free zone fo an airport, with not duty in or out on goods. The TeesValley one I believe involves reduced employee national insurance contributions and reduced corporation tax. In the USA there are different tax rates in different states to encourage businesses to States with lower taxes. Some will see it as helping business reduce tax while others see it as helping create jobs in poorer areas. In this country business used to have to obtain licences to set up manufacturing facilities. Licences were much easier to get in areas of higher unemployment. ICI received a licence to open up production facilities at Wilton in the late 1940s. The Labour Government of the time wanted ICI to build a large production facility close to East Cleveland to create jobs for redundant Ironstone miners. In todays language to level up, as production was moved from Croydon to Wilton. Many Teessiders have benefitted from employment on the Wilton site over the last 70 years, without a regional aid package it may never have happened. The site was probably at it height in the late 1970s, which took 30 years from the planning stage. In a modern world it often needs Government support to kick start developments and sometimes even provide long term subsidies. Its how a lot of agriculture has managed to survive in Western Europe with EU/EEC subsidies. Everyone can surely agree Teesside desperately needs more employers to replace the 50,000? lost ICI and British Steel and their suppliers jobs.

Current Tees Valley projects I have heard about are:

Wind Turbine production @ South Bank - announced March 2021
Redevelopment of the former SSI site (held up by delayed sale by SSI creditors , sale now completed - site needs major decommisioning work to make it usable and good quality service road or did 2 years ago whne Jim Radcliffe was looking for a site for Land Rover Defender production)
Sirius Minerals Processing plant @ Teesport - awaiting completion of underground railway from the mine at Sneaton near Whitby, now owned by Anglo American, a major Global mining company.
Creation of Freeport status - announced March 2021
Movement of some HM Treasury jobs to Darlington - announced March 2021
Movement DTI Export services (Central Govt) jobs to Darlington - announced March 2021
Carbon Capture facility @ Wilton with carbon transportation to underground sea site on Dogger Bank
Graphene production @ Wilton (this material provides something that is very strong but also flexible)
Covid19 Vaccine production @ Fuji Film Billingham (Novavax) in conjunction with GSK Barnard Castle
I know there is a lot of ongoing work with hydrogen production both blue and green hydrogen which could be a key future vehicle fuel by 2030.
Amazon Distribution Warehouse Darlington - up and running and another one planned at Billingham (I am not a big fan of Amazon - they pay no UK Corporation tax and have destroyed high street retailing jobs).
I am sure there are more that I am not aware of of have forgotten about.

6 or 7 years ago Dave Cameron made a statement that he did not know what to do about old industrial areas towns and stop their decline, it was like his Government have given up. Tony Blair's answer was more schools or should I say acadamies and newer hospitals which was nice, but only part of the solution.

No one said the WHOLE treasury was moving, Darlington is just going to be a Northern Campus

Let’s hope it happens but it’s a let’s wait and see. It’s a modern feature of politics (and not just Bunter either) that announcements are made in a blaze of publicity but nothing ever gets over the line.

The danger is this part of the world will end up caught in time again with dodgy past connections to a discredited Johnson government. I hope Houchen, as a local bloke, keeps his nose clean and out of trouble.
He's a Tory and supporter of Johnson so by definition will already be up to his neck in it. Exactly what he has been up to simply hasn't come to light yet.

Made a great start with the appointment of a 'local' company, Hall Construction.

Based in Ferryhill, outside of the TVCA area 👍
"The mayor was joined by representatives from Volvo and local firm Hall Construction to welcome a new £1m, 95-tonne excavator – one of only three in the country and the first in the north"
So he sourced from a North East company rather than further afield and you're complaining?
What would your reaction be if he brought one in from, let's say Kent, for example when there was one on his doorstep?
