he'll only ever be any good in a free flowing side, that creates lots of chances....but then better players will score more than him in those sides.
He has poor technique, poor work rate, and cannot score against decent defenders. He was a very, very poor signing that hamstrung us for the last 4 years and will continue to impact us for another 2 financially
That's the same for any striker in the championship, other than Mitrovic.
Better "players" don't necessarily score more goals though, for most strikers, being in the right place at the right time is worth much more than footballing ability, providing the players are of a certain level and fitness, which pretty much all pro's are, otherwise they wouldn't be pro's.
One thing you can't really teach is reading of the game, and anticipating where the ball will be, loads of very good "players" really struggle with this, but equally some not as good players outscore them, as they just know where to be.
If a striker is in the right place 10 times and puts it away 5 times, this is better than a striker being in the right place 5 times, and putting it away three times. But for both, if quality chances/ positions aren't created, then neither has a hope in hell.
Also, the team need to cater for what the strikers are good at, i.e high balls for those good in the air or strong, but not for those who are short/ weak/ fast., there's other ways to play to suit the latter.
All strikers struggle more against better teams, as their own team will be creating less chances, having less possession and they'll be up against better defenders/ keepers.
Yes, now and then you will get a player who ticks all the boxes of being a great footballer, and also a great finisher and great in the air, but I don't see us getting Ronaldo.
Britt's a goalscorer, but not much else (same as Rhodes), but it's the hardest box to tick. Both of their records before they came here was great, and even here they were still good for the minutes they played, and the lack of chances we create for those type of players.
Strikers will always score more in teams which create and take more chances, but we've not done that for nearly 25 years, hence why we've not had a striker score as much as other sides. The strikers goals are directly proportional to team style/ setup and chances created. We've been more of a less goals conceded/ less goals scored sort of team, especially recently.
