Walking to school in the 60s and 70s

Only 15 minutes walk to my old school unless you got chased by a stray dog which was foaming at the mouth. God the 80s were good 😊
We were driving down a country road in France and we passed at least 10 dogs running in a pack along the road. Straight away I said to the wife that it reminded me of Grangetown (the dogs not the countryside ;)) with packs of dogs roaming the streets. The wife said she had never seen dogs in large groups before.

If I went to the shops for my mum, I would have to pedal as fast as I could until I got onto Cumberland Road and put my feet on my chopper's crossbar and freewheel to the shops whilst the dogs snarled at my tyres and pedals. It was like they just came out of every house on both sides.

it was a 30 minute walk for me, endured so I could save my bus fare.

Sometimes though this would be cut to 15 minutes, but only when the canal we lived near was frozen which meant we could walk on the canal up to a field that led to the train line from Selby to York, a quick nip over that and we were about there.

Aaah the good old days, before health and safety went mad 🙈

Used to walk down Hall Drive to get to Acklam Hall. We had to touch our caps if a teacher drove past - can't remember if that was first year only.
Was Tom Bull the gym teacher when you were there?
Used to walk to Acklam Hall from Adcott Rd via Hall drive so 10 min walk - get in before the prefects tolled the bell at 8.50 am or otherwise detention. Yes, Tom Bull was the bully of a gym teacher, Joe Hurst Head, Chippy White and Pickersgill were the woodwork teachers and Neil Small the Physics teacher. Happy and formative days

My mum took me on my first day of infants. I walked home at morning break having assumed school was over. I thought 'That wasn't too bad'. My mum took me straight back but that was the last time I was accompanied by either parent.

Grove Hill roots for me… mid ’50s my younger sibs and me made the 10 min walk to and from Beech Grove Primary and Pemberton Cres.

Anyone else on here from Beech Grove or Pemberton? Years back recall connecting with one or two others on the old board.

I am quite a bit younger than you.

In the 60 and 70s I used to walk through that area a lot. As both sets of my grandparents lived in the Regent Road area. I think I remember some sort of cut through via an alleyway. Connected to the top of Regent Road.

You practically lived on the school premises. I used to spend a lot of time on Adcott Rd, as the focus of my unrequited love lived there .... but also her best friend, who became one of my best friends. Ah, The Wonder Years :) Did my old man teach you (physics)?

Borolad Can you remember the name of the shop on Tollesby Rd( the one on its own not the ones next to the Dev.). Drove past it the other day and said to my Mrs that the house on the corner at Lunedale Rd used to be a shop I went into on the way to school but couldn't remember it's name .

The shop on the corner of Lunedale AVENUE was Testers. Or at least it was in the 60's when I used to travel from Highbury Ave to St Mary's College over Devils Bridge. In those days the houses ended at Parkfield Ave and you were into Tollesby Farm. had to walk across their for the quick route. Occasionally bumped into Chris Rea if he had missed the bus from Acklam and had to walk. In winter had to take the long route over the beck at Saltersgill and up Saltersgill Ave.

Prior to the College went to St Josephs from Tollesby. Could get a bus from top of Tollesby Rd, but could save the 2d bus fare if we walked which we often did. Having walked all the way up Tollesby Rd to Emerson Ave it always seemed we were halfway there anywhere.

That was my part of town.
Our house had a view of the beck. Over some grass where we used to play footy.

At school Chris was a friend of one of my olders brothers.

Yup - and believe it or not I was often late. We lived at no 12 - the closest side of Adcott Rd to the school - is that the side you visited. Neil Small taught me plus another who joined after this photo was taken - what I do remember is they had smoking room next to the classroom in the big quadrangle

Just around the corner for Primary school (early 80's) only remember being taken to nursery, then walking myself to infants/juniors? Definitely juniors.

Then a 20-25 min walk (87-92 I think) from South Bank, across the Rec to Sarah Metcalfe (1st -4th year) before it became Eston Park in my final year. Didn't mind the woalk, well never really thought about it too much. Was a brilliant walk when we had snow! Massive drifts, really deep up against the walls of Eston Leisure Centre and The Herlingshaw!

My kids now walk to secondary down here. A 25 min walk each way, down a path alongside a dual carriageway then over a footbridge to school. Not a particularly nice walk, but lots of people and other kids around so fairly safe. No direct bus for them, but I do try and give them a lift when I can on the days I work from home (Weds/Fri)

If my memory serves me correctly we used to shortcut into Beech Grove schoolyard through an “alleyway“ off Grassington Road just up the street from where my grandparents lived.

My friend, Suzie M, lived at number 4 I think .... white 1930s house. The object of my unrequited lurv lived further round .... initials A.H. We're still mates, but not heard from Suzie for a long time. You'd have been there much earlier I guess (this was late 70s). The teacherr that arrived later could have been Ian Smith? Obvs, Neil is my old fella. Still going strong (80 now).
