VAR in the championship

It was used last season so would assume it will carry on into this seasons finals.

Given the Championship play off is deemed the richest game in football it feels like the right thing to do.

It wasn't used last season in the semis because Luton claimed they couldn't afford to install it.

Hence Huddersfield being robbed by Nottingham Forest with some awful refereeing.

I don’t like VAR in any division. Appreciate what it brings to the game, but I really miss the comfort of losing 4-0 and claiming we were robbed cos the first was offside/foul etc.

Only just watched the highlights and couldn’t tell if it was offside or not, but our penalty looked fairly dodgy.

So swings and roundabouts and all that.

I had a good view of our penalty from the side rather than behind as on the highlights.

It was a clear trip from the side, a stonewaller.

Agree that it looks nothing on the highlights.

We should have had another penalty as well?

Last nights ref was Darren bond from Lancashire

Remind me where Burnley is again ???

🤔
There are 7 league clubs in Lancashire. It's a nice idea that everyone in Lancashire is a Burnley fan, but it isn't actually true. Anyway, he gave Middlesbrough a marginal penalty, he denied Burnley are more obvious one - two very big decisions that at least could have gone either way, went Middlesbrough's way. I don't know what he did in the rest of the game to indicate bias?

And BTW, disallowing goals like the first one is the worst aspect of VAR. It was correct to let it stand last night, because under the old rules which still apply without VAR, Barnes was level. There are (under the old rules) atill three possible states- in front, behind, level. It's only the affectation of VAR that determines "level2 is no longer a thing, or at least is measured in miillimetres.

Three things the new VAR offside rule does:

1. It disallows goals that were perfectly legal under the old rules.
2. It causes delays of 2 minutes or more before you can celebrate a goal.
3. It means linesmen can't hope to get the decision right so they have to let play carry on for some pointless and irrelevant action before they flag.

None of those things benefit football. They should go back to the old rule, look at a photo without drawing lines, stop worrying about knees being ahead of shoulders and go back to torsos being the relevant factor, and then VAR checks would take 5 seconds. Easy.

Hey look this is a Boro forum, we are bound to be sore if we think the ref got it wrong.

Your first goal was offside and Archer was tripped so it was a penalty, that’s all.

It won’t change what happened.

You’ve only lost 2 games so deserve to go up, Kompany has done a good job, just enjoy the success while it lasts.

I hate VAR with a passion and would happily see it burned and then put in a box which is lowered into an active volcano which then gets nuked from orbit (as it's the only way to be sure).

Offside is offside though and by the current interpretation of the rules your first goal was off. There was also a handball on your left in the build-up which could have seen play stopped.

From my view in the stands I thought our penalty was stonewall but the highlights don't give as clear a view. I thought your shout was nailed on as well though.

Good luck in the Prem. I hope you're not haunted by VAR.

With the biggest prize money in football for promotion to the premier league, is there not an argument that VAR should be primarily used in the Championship rather than the Premier League?

I'd rather see it used to inform the correct decisions among the bottom teams in League Two, rather than determining who might finish 11th in the PL.

If technologies can't be implemented across all professional leagues, I don't think it's fair that they should only be available in one.
