von der Leyen is being ridiculed in her own country for her part in the inept EC vaccine shambles. Her threat of imposing a ban on exports is a lose-lose for the EC. If Britain chose to retaliate by banning the export of lipids produced in Yorkshire Pfizer say vaccine production would grind to a halt in a few weeks. The Irish times described her position as "carrying a knife to a gun fight."

Not another Brexit thread. The thought that the EU want to “punish” Britain is just plain silly. I honestly wonder what goes on in some peoples heads. As has already been mentioned on this thread the best way of “punishing” us at the moment is to just leave us be as we isolate ourselves form the world with our self imposed trade sanctions.

It's the governments causing the issues in plenty of European countries.

Say what you will about them, but our government is not impeding the healthcare system vaccinating.

We need to import the vaccines and many other essential things, such as some food items, medicines, gas etc from other countries. We are not self sufficient, why don't we co-operative with others positively. It's in our own interests and theirs to and so much more can be achieved and saved.

The 'me' first approach being taken by a number of countries is edging the world towards a major conflict of which there will be a point of no return where no one wins or is worth winning, sadly we don't seem to learn from history.

Very similar to individuals who say it me and my family first and I don't care about anyone or anything else. I understand why people think like that but again the reality is we need to co-operative and support each other, we are connected and society doesn't exist in a vacuum. Retrenching and selfishness doesn't make you safer, it makes you more vulnerable and needing, more and more weapons, alarms and technology to help keep you safe.

The EU don’t need to punish the U.K.- that is already happening without an sanctions from them. The ordinary working man and woman here is going to be picking up the tab for Brexit and Covid for decades to come

That wasn't going to happen for at least a decade anyway. The EU were already sick of us. The only way they would accept us back is as a country that was fully committed with a consistent pro EU majority in the country, otherwise they would see us as too much of a risk of another brexit fiasco to negotiate every few years.

So it will have to play out and either be such a failure a lot of people will change their minds within this Parliament, so that Starmer could take us back in to the EEA perhaps, or else time changes the demographics.

Macron now does not come on TV to announce bad news such as a lock down, he pushes his deputy onstage.
