Tv debates for Tory leadership

I absolutely hate that this is happening. It's free PR for whoever 'wins'. One of them will look the best, the nation (or at least currently dissatisfied/swaying tory voters) will take to him/her and they then call a snap election for 'a mandate'. Hey presto! we're suddenly back to square one, looking at another 5 years of wanton destruction of anything left of value in our country. Perhaps we should rejoice by opening another few hundred foodbanks and selling off the NHS.

If Truss gets in there is no way the Tories are winning a GE.

Mordaunt on the other hand might be a different proposition.

I'm #TeamTruss :ROFLMAO:

Completely not needed and totally unnecessary. It's allowing the Tories a free shot at priming sections of the population. Those standing will all claim to "fix the economy" or "unite the country". It's like the f*ckers haven't been in power for 12 years. It's not only Johnson's incompetent government, but everyone of them since 2010.

It doesn’t matter. We are not the target audience. That is 200.000 membership, probably just over half will be bothered to vote…also look at the sorry mess of the candidates that have never had an original idea in their lives, that’s the reason they are there. In the end it was the Tory party donors who said. No more money until he’s gone. New leader bit more competent and willing to follow instructions, money tap is turned on again…back to the same old, same old.

It will be interesting how many do vote.

Braverman was the only one Farage would endorse and she has gone. He was scathing about all the others, so the 70k+ Vote Leave entryists might not be bothered about voting. It seems Boris put on 40k to the membership, so most of them might not care to vote.

200k members supposedly. I bet the number who vote is less than 40% of that ie 80k.

does anyone have historical %'s of votes for prior leaders? would be interesting to see

This was just a quick look

How many Tory members voted for Boris Johnson?
2019 Conservative Party leadership election
Candidate Boris Johnson Jeremy Hunt
Fifth MPs' ballot 160 (51.3%) 77 (24.7%)
Members' vote 92,153 (66.4%) 46,656 (33.6%)

2019

Boris Johnson 92,153 (66.4%)
Jeremy Hunt 46,656 (33.6%)
509 spoilt ballots

2016

Theresa May didn't go to the members as she was unopposed in the end when Leadsom withdrew.

2005

David Cameron 134,446 (67.6%)
David Davis 64,398 (32.4%)

2003

Michael Howard was elected unopposed.

2001

Ian Duncan Smith 155,993 (60.7%)
Ken Clarke 100,864 (39.3%)

In 1997 William Hague was elected only by the MP's, as had been the rules until then. The rules were changed in 1998 to put the choice between the final two to the members.

Well what happened - don’t tell me. They all promised that things would be so much better if they were installed as leader - right ? Did anyone stand there blowing a trumpet ?

Anyway BBC's no 1 takeaway is:

Ms Truss, who came third in the latest MPs' voting round on Thursday, said the (NI) hike had been "wrong" and said she had "called it out" in cabinet.
She said if she won power she would reverse the rise, as well as removing green levies on energy bills - saying she would pay for it for by spreading the UK's "Covid debt" over a longer period.
But Mr Sunak rubbished her proposals, saying there was "no such thing as Covid debt" and warned against an "unfunded spree" of tax cuts, adding that "borrowing your way out of inflation isn't a plan, it's a fairy-tale".
Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt, currently second in the contest, said her economic blueprint, which involve raising income tax thresholds in line with inflation, was based on better "growth and competition".

'No such thing as Covid debt' Wow. Imagine if Covid hadn't happened and we could've spent it on something really useful (NHS or free holidays for 2m people etc). I used to really respect that guy

Looking at the debate tonight Johnson must be sat at home thinking what an idiot I am losing the leadership.
