Trevor Sinclair

Disagree we should become a republic at all. I hope the monarchy personally rules for many more centuries. Ideally forever

There is nothing more British than the monarchy to me . I think it’s great we’ve managed to preserve some of our traditions and institutions but continue to change as a country in other ways . Change for the sake of it is not a good thing. It seems to me there are some in this country who want to do away with anything to do with our history and tradition when it’s a big part of our culture

When I used to be a teen and left wing I was a republican . As I’ve agedxthough, the more pro monarchy I’ve become

Yes, it’s a history and culture of classism and inequality, built on the back of colonialism. It has no place in a progressive, modern society.

Let’s call it what it is
Pro Monarchy = pro a family born into wealth and privilege living an ostentatious lifestyle of (for example) flying around in private helicopters whilst advising their ‘subjects’ on the perils of climate change.

Nothing wrong with being pro monarchy and nothing wrong with being a republican, a question though, do you not see wanting Britain to become a republic as a fruitless endeavour? It will never happen.

But it’s not all black and white , is it?

Like everywhere , part of our history has been good and part bad. To just dismiss all of our history and change it is just obscene to me

To say the monarchy represents all those things is absurd too. The monarchy is defined by people in it at the time, as is wider society. The monarchy used to be imperialist , but queen Elizebeth saw a peaceful transition to losing our empire that even enabled us to maintain good relations with a lot of the former territories . She brought unity between the uk and Ireland and even have Sinn Fein mourning her passing. To shake the hands of the former ira leader when they killed one of your relatives takes massive balls and did wonders for peace and long term stability

The monarchy has changed over time to fit with the times

I don’t think we should dismiss our history at all, we could abolish the monarchy and open it up to tourism and generate the same income without continuing a tradition that has no place anymore.

They don’t represent me.

But they do represent me and many others, so I wish for the tradition to maintain.

So long as they represent their public largely , that will continue

I don’t think what he has said is anything crazy to be honest. Bunch of white people in this thread making out that just because Britain isn’t as bad as other countries that he should be thankful for that.

Some of the replies to his tweet were far, far worse than anything he said. I noticed a few people saying that the Queen was a beacon of hope, a beacon of hope for who? How is a woman who was born into privilege a beacon of hope? Barack Obama was a beacon of hope, he wasn’t a great president but he gave millions hope that they could one day be in a position they never thought they could be in.

You’ll be waiting a long time for that scrug.

Yes, people freely making their decision is fine by me. Just pointing out what ‘pro monarchy’ can be interpreted as.
Also yes, folly to hope for a republic in my lifetime but will just allow myself a smidge of hope.

That’s fair, Are there groups actively trying to change to a republic? I don’t really know much or anything about the movement.

I thought I was totally anti monarchy but found the death of Elizabeth upsetting. Found myself in tears watching her life story. Maybe it's because she has been such a constant in my 64 years.
I couldn't see me feeling that way about any of the others.

I don’t think there is a ‘serious’ movement.
The last polls had something like 57% supporting a monarchy- that will have increased significantly, for obvious reasons.

Unless Charlie boy makes a hash of it - it will be here for a while yet

When were those polls taken?
Although recent events may have increased support. The previous events in the last couple of years will have decreased support

I can guarantee as the cost of living grows and more are plunged into poverty we’ll see a rise in republicanism. It just doesn’t compute.
