Labour need to find a way to make socialism acceptable and not be seen as a road to ruin.
We are, to some extent, a more sedate reflection of US politics. Johnson is a diluted version of Trump. Equally abhorrent, but cleverer and more snide in promoting his views.
If you've been watching US politics since Biden was elected you'll have seen the Republican party sacrifice any pretence of policy for a stance that is basically to oppose everything Biden proposes. Biden has however passed several bills that are very socialist for the US and they have met with overwhelming public approval. In fact, several GOP representatives are now claiming credit for the benefits that the latest recovery package is bringing to their districts while completely ignoring the fact that they voted against it.
Socialist policy has always been demonised and defeated because of the lie that it costs too much and that it will saddle future generations with debt. However, as any successful business will prove, you often have to encumber yourself with debt in order to be able to develop and ultimately profit. If you run up massive debts but use the money to improve things like education, health care, employment, infrastructure and other programs that benefit society as a whole then you are ensuring the future of those kids. Or you can do what this lot are doing and allow masses of public funds to be siphoned off by the rich. It's policy like the Tories are adopting that will ensure that future generations will pay, not just in financial terms but also in ways that are hard to quantify such as an absence of opportunity.
If Labour or anyone else can pull off this trick then they'll be able to disprove the lie of trickle down economics or any other policy that conservatives tell us is the best way.
However, as pierre says, it's not in the British psyche to embrace socialism for the greater good.
