Tories battered

They made a referendum a condition of their coalition with the tories. But they couldn't stop the tories (along with Labour) campaigning against it. There wasn't much support for it on here, either, as I recall.
I was in the PR camp on here, and there was definitely some support, more than for the botched offering we got.

Labour were down 4,700 votes on general election, fortunately tories were down 13,000 votes, wouldn't say that is great for labour

Love this, Labour win by-election which is bad news for Labour.

Turnout as a percentage of GE was actually quite high for a by-election which saw a significant swing to Labour which if replicated in a GE would see a much larger majority.

I didn't say it was bad news for Labour but with the amount of effort put in I thought it would have been better

Wonder if some Tories, having screwed the country and knowing what’s coming down the road wouldn’t mind losing the next election. Because of what Labour/Lib Dems will have to do to rectify it they could possibly see it as a one term Parliament.
The most interesting thing is Unite (union) affiliated, and a big contributor to the party, have come out in favour of PR. Any deals or agreements with the LD’s would have include PR in a manifesto.
The Labour Party conference should prove interesting.

But you'd be wrong as history tells us that by-elections have about a 20-25% fall in turnout compared to a GE, regardless of "effort".

Labour won this constituency by a swing large enough to win a majority in the next election, the total number of votes is not really relevant. +8% with a 12% swing is a very good result.

Yes I know how turn outs work, just don't think this is the ringing endorsment of Labour some would like to make out it is.

Then you don't. It's pretty straightforward.

Comparing a by-election to a GE is historically ridiculous. Significantly less people vote, especially when it was almost a forgone conclusion that Labour would win comfortably.

Aye, inevitably the way it was going to be spun by the media. So predictable.

I've always voted Labour and was a member of the party until recently .. I am not Sir Keir's biggest fan and remain to be convinced Labour can win a GE under his leadership. I hope I am wrong, though. Remains to be seen ..

I have just watched BBC'S Newsnight report and it was a fking joke.. was all about how bad this is for Labour and no focus at all on the tragicomedy that is Johnson's reign crumbling to a pathetic mess

Ridiculous

Will never vote Tory. Can’t currently vote Labour under Starmer.

Genuinely don’t know who to vote for.
We`ve got to get these Tories out mate

Please for the sake of those with no strength to fight the misery they endure every day, vote to get them out when the time comes

Take a shower after to remove that dirty feeling but then rejoice when our votes combined remove this utterly disgusting Conservative Party that is choking the very life out of this country

If not for yourself but for your fellow-man
