Tonight’s front 3 or 4

With Morgan sadly missing for tonight how do you think we’ll line up in the attacking third tonight now that latte and crooks look to be back in contention.

My guess. I think he might pack a midfield 3,. The main support for Crooks/Coburn will come from Bangura and Jones bombing forward.

--------------Crooks----------------

---Hackney--Barlaser--Howson---

Bangura-----------------------Jones

Chelsea play with a high line, second only to manchester city and concede a lot of goals.

Latte Lath will prosper if he plays tonight AND we can get the right service into him. I will be amazed if Carrick isn't aware of this and sets the team up to take advantage of this.

I'd play out from the back for the first 5-10mins, draw them in and then go long ball, Jones/Lath will get a brace before half time catching them on the break and playing over the top of them and then we can slow it down in the 2nd half.

This management lark is easy.

I'd definitely start Latte Lath, try to use his pace and hope he can actually get a proper shot off for once.

Jones and Crooks are obviously starting.

That left hand side is the big question, whoever plays there is out of position.

I'd agree with this, except I would be tempted to go with ELL instead of Coburn.

I think MC will start with Coburn however!

Whilst it is undeniable the LL puts in a shift, his decision making is shocking.
Rarely seems to get a shot off and runs into blind alleys.

Whoever you play up there is going to be isolated.
For me Coburn is the better option because he's more likely to get the ball to stick and hold it long enough for support and bring others into play. Like he did against Villa.

I get the argument for Lath and using his pace to try and get in behind. I just feel like with Lath up there he won't hold it up as well and it will end up coming straight back every time we play forward.

This but with Latte Lath up top.

Its easily switched to our favoured 4-2-3-1 as well, especially when attacking...

Fry/Howson/Latte in for Rogers/Greenwood/Coburn

Play tight in midfield with Hackney/Howson/Barlaser

Push Bangura further forward and let him cause havoc with pace along with Latte & Jones.

Seems like a lot of support for Lath to come in for Coburn. I'm quite surprised at that. I though Coburn did well against Villa. Held the ball up and caused them issues.
For me, Coburn is the more influencial team player. More often than not he will win a header or shield the ball and hold the ball up around the half way line but if we aren't supporting him he looks isolated up there, he's often holding the ball up for absolutely nobody and then Lath is more of a runner, headless chicken at times, but his energy and pace could trouble a defence more than Coburns. If we could just combine the two i'd be happy. Joshuel Clatte Burn.

Completely agree, he did nothing wrong, and lead the line well. Thats why i expect MC to continue with him.

I just think I'd like us to be a bit more aggressive going forward with it being our home leg, and for all of his faults (decision making at times etc) I think ELL has the unpredictability and pace that Coburn doesn't, and might be able to disrupt the Chelsea back line better.

For what its worth 😂

Whilst I personally would go with the same back 5 I am now of the opinion Fry may just come in. I think his height may be a reason why. @Norman_Conquest i think he will start now.

I can see us going like this this

Fry
Clarke

Jones
Howson
Barlaser
Bangura

Crooks
Hackney

Coburn

The way I see the game going is we are going to get men behind the ball and a very rigid shape like we did against Villa. If we win the ball and manage to move it forward quickly, the likelihood is, whichever striker is playing, that they are going to be up against 3 Chelsea defenders on their own until support arrives. We won't have the luxury of having Jones/Greenwood/Rogers et al to get immediately around the striker to support them.

Coburn has the strength to hold off one or two defenders for those couple of seconds until support arrives. I'm not sure Lath can do that. I'm not sure his touch is good enough to make things difficult for them.

Id like to play the same 5221 type formation. With HH ELL in the two positions Greenwood and Rogers occupied. Having the pace of ELL to hit on the counter will be vital. playing crooks in there might make it a bit harder for us to get out.

I think we might put three in the middle, effectively 5 when we have the ball (Bangura/Jones at WB).

If we stick with the front 3 approach from Sat, I'd be tempted to lead the line with Josh and have ELL play just off him. If, and it's a big if, he could find room in the half space, his pace from deep might be difficult to pick up. I'd prefer him to have 5-10 yards unopposed rather than a direct foot race on their last line of defence.

Might also disrupt their backline if they pull someone forward to mark him.

I don't think it ever was a front 3, certainly out of possession. Greenwood and Rogers created a box behind Coburn, effectively cutting off the passing lines through the middle of us. like a 5221.
