Tonight’s front 3 or 4

Seems like a lot of support for Lath to come in for Coburn. I'm quite surprised at that. I though Coburn did well against Villa. Held the ball up and caused them issues.

He did, I just think a bit of pace up top might work against Chelsea.

Especially if Thiago Silva starts.

Lath is great when Coburn had ran the defence ragged. That seems to be the plan at the moment.

For me I would play Lath off the left tonight to help Coburn out. Batter them and run them ragged for pace.

I think Lath to run at them for 15 or 20 minutes at the end is perfect for him. Let Coburn do his stuff for as long as he can be effective for before then

definitely go 532 with Howson, Hackney, Barlaser in midfield and 2 of LL, Coburn and Crooks up top

all 3 are coming back from injury so I guess it will come down to which 2 are fittest / freshest.

All things being equal, I would start with Coburn and Latte Lath, with crooks to come off the bench

I think the Villa formation was a one off, MC wanted to give Howson & Fry a rest, give Hackney 45, he said the line up/shape was more down to personell than anything else. I think he’ll revert back to the 4231 with Hackney pushed forward on the left, ELL up front to threaten the high line

You make a good point. However, my thinking is this: Coburn will hold the ball up better, but holding the ball up, slows things down and allows a high chelsea back line get back into position.

Lathe will, with the right service break away from the high line and bare down on goal.

For the record, I think they are both quite wasteful in front of goal.

I think the opposite, I think he used the Villa game as a dry run, test a different formation against a top team. When we played Brighton last season with the tried and trusted 4231 we got battered.

I don't think it ever was a front 3, certainly out of possession. Greenwood and Rogers created a box behind Coburn, effectively cutting off the passing lines through the middle of us. like a 5221.
I think it was fluid, couple of times they seemed pretty straight when Villa had the ball with keeper/CDs. At other times more of a box.

Gap to the two midfielders was too large at times, when we closed that we started to get on top - effectively overloading the centre of the pitch and giving the WBs more space.

Not a chance I am afraid. 2 strikers coming back from injury, both expected to play 90 minutes? Not to mention how that would effect our ability to control the midfield.

He may change to this sort of formation if we are behind or the game requires it, but he isn't going to start like this.
