Tommy Smith

I agree with this
Looked his age tonight
I don’t think he was at his best but I can also give you a boat load of games this season where he certainly hasn’t looked his age and been one of the best players ever on the pitch.

Due to his age, people will always start throwing out this narrative on the occasional time he has a below average game - “over the hill” etc. But against the best side in the league is no disgrace. He will eventually be replaced but he’s still been excellent for the most part this season.

Re: Smith. He’s a solid pro - 7/10 most games. Good leader on the pitch. I like him but under no illusions that we would probably have to strengthen that area if we went up to the PL.

Smith and Giles are my worry against Luton, as Luton like to stretch the game and go down the flanks, both Smith and Giles are better going forward than they are at defending.

Smith & Giles are good players you dont become bad players over 2 games its the messing at the back that is throwing everthing out of sink.

How many fouls did Smith give away last night

How many times did he lunge in and put us at risk

Smith has been poor for a career, not just two games

No its all because carrick is playing a fish out of water in mcnair smith has been good up to then i will blame woodgate having his say on team selection that is causing all the trouble could be wrong.

Spence is first name on rennes team sheet he might have stayed if carrick came in early . Smith is ok is he better than spence with fross playing ahead of spence it would allow fross to run infield more which isnt happing now.

They definitely targeted him last night and he did struggle.

It's a bit of a concern but let's see how he performs at Bristol before we even start to consider taking him out of the team.

It's a team game, with every position connected. It not necessarily that Fry is better than McNair, but being more defensively minded he might mitigate some of Smiths defensively frailties while McNair adds to them. Likewise Forss offers more protection when Smith goes forward the Ramsey or McGree. As the game has proves many times over the years, the best collection of players don't always make the best teams.

Smith is struggling because he’s getting no defensive support from midfield since Ramsey replaced Forss.
Nail on head. Forss and smith combine defensively and offensively well together. Ramsey has undoubted talents but he needs to improve his team play

There’s a reason he was on a free people, Stoke didn’t want him. Both Stoke and Huddersfield fans had him as our weak link in the build up to playing them, they were right!
