Tommy Conway

It wasn’t strange though was it. We could have done a Hull, blew our budget on players who weren’t much better than what we had and ended up in a position no better than we ended up.

Yes, difficult pill to swallow at the time but we chose a longer term strategy. Once injuries came back towards the end of the season, we were a different side with an injection of confidence.

Even if we had have reached the play offs, it would have been a difficult one to win given the sides that were in there. It was a gamble the club weren’t willing to take.

If this season goes to plan, it’ll prove to be the correct decision. Although as said above, a loan for a striker should have been brought in to bridge the gap like we did with Thomas for Banguras injury.
We had one main target and that was Brandon Vasquez and when he didn't come we just decided to wait until the summer.
Promotion was looking unlikely and the teams at the top were flying.
Can't blame the club for essentially just deciding to leave it.
We didn't get Rodgers deal done until the last week of the window, our recruitment team thinks things through until they're absolutely sure. There was no way we were ever going to go in for anyone else

Forgot about Vasquez . Just looked and he scored 6 goals in 21 games in the Mexican league.

Even if some of our ‘missed opportunity’ do badley elsewhere , it doesn’t necessarily mean the carrick effect wouldn’t of worked on them had their come here

He flew from Gatwick to Newcastle Airport and planned to join Boro - he quoted before flying from Argentina "I'm going to Middlesbrough".

But his Argentina club had also said something like "If Manchester offer him more money, then he will go to Manchester" - which I'm guessing is what happened.
All the stories I've seen before have it that Man Utd already had talks with him, we tried to get in there and he said he was going to come but fergie rang him and for him back onside.

We were in S. America for weeks, negotiating with him. He flew to London on his way to Teesside and Man U intercepted hem there and persuaded him to sign for them. It was a big mistake for him because he did nothing there.

Sometimes I think we should say to other clubs - offers lapse after 72 hours.

It feels like Bristol City have put our offer into the public domain and said Boro have offered say £2.5m plus £2.5m in add ons i.e. up to £5m - any more, any one.

I can understand they want to maximise their income, but is this going to go on until the end of August?

No difference from any other club and how transfers work.

If we start inventing our own rules in the transfer market you'll find we dont buy or sell many players.

My idea would we leave the negotiation to the experts.

but that happens in a roundabout way - clubs can withdraw offers, it can also submit bids elsewhere and "leak" that info so the selling club becomes anxious etc etc.

This was my understanding of the transfer too. I think it was Keith Lamb and someone else, maybe McClaren or one of the coaches said they were waiting at the airport for him and he didnt show up. They then got a phone call to say he was on his way to Manchester to sign for united.

Also just seen this on wiki (i know, not the most reliable source but...)

"His goalscoring attracted the attention of European sides, and in January 2002, Independiente agreed a £6.9 million deal with Middlesbrough of the Premier League; the transfer fee would be paid over 18 installments. Forlán travelled to England expecting to negotiate with Middlesbrough, but at the last minute Manchester United gazumped the Teesside club, offering Independiente the same fee in a single payment, as well as a more lucrative salary for Forlán. On arriving in England, he negotiated with United officials for four hours, then informed the press of his decision. "Manchester United is a big club, so I've decided to go there," he explained. "The thing is, they offered more money than Middlesbrough."[10] He signed for United soon after.[11]"

I think it's a fairly easy bluff to call if you've stated he's your main summer target.

I also think BC have said words to the effect of "the sooner the better"; they presumably want the chance to spend some of that cash too.

Waiting until the end of August to accept a bid is Bristol City's prerogative. As it is ours to move on to other targets if we think it's dragging on.
Aye. Think it depends if other clubs are legitimately interested or not.

You can probably only sit on a bid for so long before you have to accept or reject it.

I'm not sure this lad is so good we can't move on fairly quickly if Bristol drag their feet.

Unless the club feel like they're making progress I'd expect they'll already be making enquiries elsewhere.

I would have thought if Celtic and Burnley are very keen he would be there now. No mention of even any bids from them.

It appears there is no common ground between Boro and Bristol City on price.

I think there's an agreement on valuation, rather it's not agreed how the deal would be structured.

Still think it's more likely to happen then not, but we all know transfers can always throw up a shock or two.

If they wait too long they risk being unable to spend the money (assuming of course that they want to). If no one else has put serious money on the table and we were to "move on" then they could be stuck with the prospect of him moving for next to now in January or nowt at all next summer.

I expect this will either go through in the next week or so, or not at all.

Ditto

Its not helping either club at present with regards planning for August games.

Like most fans I would be interested to find out what the difference in structure of the deal is.

Also how keen Conway is to come. Does he see it as a big a step up as he wants at present.

What I like about this one is it feels right for the player and Boro. I am a bit sorry for Bristol fans, but they have bought 2 replacements already. Conway will get plenty of minutes on the pitch with Boro, more pay, and be hopefully in a top 6 team. Boro get a young but experienced forward with 1 in 4 record whose style fits the way we play.
