To everyone who wanted us to take the money for Latte Lath in January

He defended from the front. His pressing got us much higher up the pitch as a team. We are now sitting so deep and have lost our outlet.
His value was partly due to his workrate and his pressure on the opposition when we were not in possession.
He is a great player and thats why we made so much money on him.
He is a huge loss, not just in terms of scoring goals.

although a decent player was lath,he certainly was nowhere near the fee we got for him,had to sell him if the fees were to believed about 18 mill

We’ve defended poorly all season - have you seen our goals conceded?
Everyone above us have conceded less

It’s a huge stretch to say the departure of LL has had a negative impact.

But, I respect it’s your opinion

Do you still think it was the correct decision? Latte leaving along with Doak's injury has left us looking so weak in that final third. Crazy decision not waiting until the summer.

Depends who we sign with the money in the summer

Part of attracting players that we hope will develop and move onto bigger things is an acceptance that we will allow that to happen if they want to go.

Rogers did and so did ELL.

From a purely footballing perspective then he stays, but we all know there's additional and equally important drivers that influence these things.

And in any event the reason why we're so poor currently isn't because we sold ELL, that's said.

And then what happens? Again we cash in on our best player in the January window and massively weaken the squad? If we plan to sell our best players it should be done in the summer so we can get a suitable replacement in. Our fans pay a lot of money following the club, more than most in the Championship, we deserve better in my opinion.

That’s the model. Bring in players, make them better, sell for profit. Hope we get lucky one year and go up.

The alternative? Spaff it all up the wall and maybe end up bust chasing the dream of Premier League football knowing we are not financially able to compete in the top flight? End up back as we were in ‘86. No thanks.

Our fans pay a fortune. I do not agree with the prices. Fans have a voice and I don’t mean the moans on here - they can talk with their feet.

I agree with the model and understand why we have to operate in this way as a club. As I've said in my post, what I don't agree with is selling our best players mid season without getting suitable replacements in. If we do business in the summer when we can actually replace these players then fair enough.

Many of us were very vocal that selling ELL so late in the January window was season ending for us. I’m sure Carrick is telling Gibson the same. His sale was I presume seen as a necessity to balance the books. I am not convinced ELL wanted to go to America - I think his hope was always a move to the Premier League and I believe we could have kept him and made at least the same level of profit in the summer or more importantly have met ELL’s ambitions through promotion. Anybody who didn’t appreciate the devastating effect losing ELL would have on the team hadn’t been watching the Boro this season. He was the passion, the effort and the commitment that drove and inspired the team and is exactly what we are missing now.

We had to, he wanted to go. We likely wouldn’t have got a 22m offer again either

If Carrick had wanted to keep Lath then he should have made sure we were in with a chance of promotion. Rogers and Lath have been sold mid-season because the gamble of not getting a similar offer in the summer was bigger than the gamble of keeping them and us getting promoted. 2 seasons we have under-performed so when January has come around we're not in a position to turn down those bids. If we had been where Sunderland/Burnley/Leeds/Sheff Utd had been we wouldn't have sold Lath, and probably would have just strengthened.

I agree with others. Obviously nobody wanted him sold, they can just accept that we couldn't turn it down because of the circumstances.

Would have been absolutely crazy not to accept £22m for Latte.

Absolutely crazy.
quite comfortably a club record, even when we pay Atlanta the extra 5% or whatever it is, we can go and buy 4 more players at the same value we paid for Lath. If one turns out a 20m player, another a 10m, another a 4m another a dud. we will be improved as a squad.

This is the model. Our squad valu has to increase year on year to be a serious promotion contender.

£5/6M already on Whittaker. He needs to up his game massively to show it was money well spent!
That was from the jones money.

He’s shown glimpses, but it’ll be next season before we see the real Whittaker as he’s entered into a very out of kilter side.

He is a good ball carrier, has vision and we haven’t seen it yet, but he has a rocket shot

I do yeah, when it was obvious that we weren’t going to get automatic promotion and, let’s be honest, with the Top 4 running away with it in terms of they are having much better seasons than the other 20 clubs, then yeah, make us as strong as we can be in the summer under a manager that knows what he’s doing and go again next season.
I understand that the 3 clubs that will be relegated from the Prem will be very strong but isn’t that always going to be the case!!
We will be armed with the ELL money plus whatever we get from inevitable sales in the summer and we have a proper rebuild.
There’s only about 8 1st team players that I would want to see here next season and one or two of those players might be sold to help fund a rebuild .
