It is unsurprising. They suspended the tendering processes which usually weed these things out because they've never get the contract if up against genuine bids. Suspending tendering was good, because it allowed much quicker ordering but it meant the people having to make the decision had to be trusted to do their own due diligence and they will undoubtedly have been taken advantage of by overpaying to anyone with stock, or it seems, just the promise of stock.

Are you really saying that the suspension of tendering was a good thing but it meant that the nice folk making the decisions were unfortunately hoodwinked?

It was good because tendering takes ages and we didn't have ages. It was an emergency. Most businesses were happy to help and didn't take advantage but there will have been a minority that did. When I say "nice folk making the decisions" I mean the people working in the NHS doing their usual jobs in tense times, not the politicians. This advisor is not the decision maker, he is someone that knew the rules and then set up a company to take advantage and hoodwinked a decision maker.

Corruption in Government is unfortunately not that unusual in the UK, as was proved years ago by the expenses scandal, but what is breathtaking about the current Government is how staggeringly incompetent they are.

This Government and all who sail in her, including Dom The Merciless and his secret police at Downing St, have become a parody of their former selves. They seem to have no moral compass and do not care about anything but a desired outcome. Whoever or whatever stands in their way, be it people or processes, they are irrelevant. They haven’t even the good grace to try and hide it.

The media are as bad, they care more about who is sleeping with who, than any corruption or misconduct in public office from politicians, they seem to just accept the situation as the new norm. In any other ‘profession’ some of these people would have been sacked before now for gross misconduct. In modern day politics, the end always seems to justify the means. The democracy we once knew is almost dead, it is like a 20 stone, 90 yr old diabetic, having contracted covid-19 and placed on a ventilator just trying to make it through to the next day.

The tories are the republicans of the UK and Johnson is our Trump, we have the Government the public deserve. Roll on 2024 and pray Labour despite it’s current in fighting, finally gets its act together in time.
 
I'll say it again. Day by day it must be getting more difficult for Conservative or Conservative leaning folks to defend this corrupt rabble. Those of them with a moral compass anyway.

Roofie, I agree with your point about Marples of course but the Wilson labour governments were totally complicit in railway closures from when they were elected in1964 up until they were booted out in 1970. They fought the 1964 election promising to halt the Beeching cuts while the Beeching plan was reviewed, then went ahead with nearly all of them, including the closure of the Waverley Route from Edinburgh to Carlisle via Galashiels, Melrose and Hawick, all solid liberal areas so they didn’t care. The ones they halted were in marginal labour constituencies in Wales, as was famously remembered by George Thomas in his biography. Wilson and Castle were ruthless when it came to closing railway lines.

However to suggest that the government have been taken to the cleaners, surely he is having a giggle. Here is just one example, and the Good Law Project will get their judicial review on this, the government spent 850,000 of our tax pounds under the pandemic emergency legislation, to pay for a brexit report. No tendering process and it went to an organization that was newly incorporated.

The emergency legislation have allowed the government to funnel money from the poor to the rich at an unprecedented rate.

Let's not talk about the rat catchers, who get a 1 million contract to supply PPE. They had 16 employees, or the company that was incorporated 2 days after lockdown with a share value of £2 that was given a 1.5 million contract to supply PPE. Neither company supplied a single item of PPE.

This is not about people being hoodwinked and Boromike if you believe that you are an idiot, if you are trotting it out as an excuse you are morally bankrupt.

If you read my posts then you will see that I didn't defend anyone in government. I defended the abandonment of the tendering process as a necessity in an emergency and I defended the majority of people that were placing orders without the security of a tendering process behind them and all of the companies that went over and above to help out where possible. Some dishonest people/businesses and governmental decision makers have taken the opportunity to line their pockets and I clearly haven't or wouldn't defend them.

It was common knowledge that we were overpaying for all sorts of stuff, it is no surprise that people that know the system knew how/where to insert themselves to make some money. This is why we have a tendering process and why we are audited because it reduces the opportunity for people to do this sort of thing without getting caught.

The government aren't a single entity. It was individuals taking the **** which an organisation can't stop. What it can do is punish people when it is found that they have done something wrong. Standing by people that have been found out essentially committing fraud is reprehensible and should be called out.

A significant number who voted this government in (who may have voted alternatives) won’t know or care about this. They are the politically naive, the easily manipulated and hoodwinked, the Facebook status readers and believers.

They cared only about two things “get Brexit done” and “what if Corbyn/Abbott got in”.

We as a country are going to hell in a hand cart, the super rich are rubbing their hands in glee - make hay while the sun shines. Under this government the heat wave of corruption is unprecedented.

I'd have helped. With no knowledge of what was required, I'd be happy to pocket taxpayers money for not delivering anything.

In an emergency, getting things right are critical, not how quick the tendering process is.
 
There really ought to be jail time at some point. Shouldnt the queen be piping up and protect her subjects. Our money just being given away to the rich

Not always. There's a tolerance. Getting 90% of it right makes it worthwhile. Wasting a bit of money isn't as important as making sure our staff had the PPE and ventilators we needed. Tendering was pointless anyway because we pretty much wanted everything that everyone was offering.

Sorry Mike, I don't buy that at all. The government are complicit in every covid emergency purchase, I understand that other departments play a part, but very clearly the government are manipulating the situation to shovel our money into the hands of friends of the party.
