This is not on carrick

It was always likely with the personnel changes we've had that things wouldn't gel immediately. In both away games we've competed and suffered bad luck/errors; in both homes games we've struggled to break down teams that sat deep. We had games like that last season. My concern is that the crowd gets on the young players' backs and they go into their shells. From there it's a doom loop. I agree that we need to better protect the defence - I've long said we were brittle - and I can't see we have the correct sort of player in the group. We also need a settled back four.

I'm totally glad Carrick is our manager though. We try and play football. He's lost some good players and they've been replaced with projects. That's not his fault but he hasn't whined about it at all. Listen to his press conference the other day: "It's not my money"; "It is what it is". He was the epitome of calm, reflective positivity. He understands what some fans refused to, that when we lost the play offs, the high-value players would go/not return. And he also understands that he has to try and build confidence in his young inexperienced players. Let's get behind him.

Spot on...we've tried to replace £50m worth of talent with £10m. That's before the free transfer market opens on the 2nd September. Let's hope by the end of the week that we have 2-3 special players on loan to give us a boost. I think we'll be around 8th this year if we get a few more in. Playoffs and automatics went when Akpom was sold.

Absolutely deluded with 8th

Can honestly see Carrick walking on us if this sh1te continues. Losing Giles and Akpom has really hurt things in the dressing room I have heard and read and the dreadful start, Carrick being irked .. none of it bodes well.
And who could blame him, we all know theres plenty of suitors out there including West Ham.

It’s crazy what we’ve done this summer

West Ham won’t be touching him with a barge pole at the moment. We’re third bottom in the championship with a point to our name. West Ham are top of the premier league and have won the conference league. Moyes is working wonders and continues to prove the doubters wrong.

Carrick is here until he gets pushed but hopefully that won’t be any time soon and he can turn it round because it has been a miserable start. I have faith he can do it, but he does need to change something. He will be disappointed with the recruitment but he has to try and do the best with what he’s got and getting us looking a proper team again. Fingers crossed we get some new faces in before the end of the window.

I think many potential suitors would wait to see how things pan out over the coming months before jumping onto Carrick.

It was obvious that last season was our golden opportunity to get out of this league and in not doing so would lose our best players and require very significant recruitment just to stand still.

Such a shame then that we capitulated so pathetically at the end of last season and Carrick has to take responsibility for that.

I'm not defending the club, but how else could they have managed the ins and outs this summer.

Chuba - couldn't get a deal agreed to fit our salary cap. Couldn't turn down £12m
Archer - where are we getting £18m from?
Ramsey - £14m - can't afford him..... Burnley can gamble.
Giles - if the rumours are true we thought we had the deal sorted, Luton came in and gazumped us
Steffen - couldn't afford him.

So, with the budget we have and fully recognising the squad isn't big enough we've signed 9 players, young, with potential. Assuming 9 experienced pros were going to cost too much, no resale value, this is the path we've chosen. Time will tell if it's successfull or not.

Now, we desperately need 2-3 experienced players in - CB, CM and CF. Get these, we'll be okay. Usual last minute transfer bollox, we will struggle this season - that's plain to see.

Need to bit a little bit more patient and see what we a looking like after the international break/late September.

So last season it was Carrick being a great coach and not well done to gibbo and Scott for bringing in quality. If hes such a good coach surely he can turn this shower into a promotion winning team.

Cant have it both ways. They are all culpable
No I will give them all credit for that. Its clear to see he's a good coach, whether or not I think carrick maybe could of picked out better players than the ones we have signed. But we will never know now. Big week ahead let's hope they pull some miracles.

The new players needing time to gel would be a legitimate excuse if these were new problems, but almost everything we’re seeing right now is a continuation of what we saw last season when we had better players.

There’s a pattern developing and it’s concerning that he continues to do the same thing week in, week out and is expecting different results. That’s not the sign of a good coach, a good coach adapts to the players and situation he’s dealt.

Why are there so many "1 system" managers out there.

Looks like Carrick is just like the rest of them at the moment, I'm really hoping he can change approach but so far I see nothing to suggest he's willing to try.

Was quite refreshing listening to Rob Edwards on Friday night football saying yeah he played progressive, passing based possession football at Forest Green because that suited his players then and now he’s went to Luton he believes the best way to get results is a more direct game so he plays that way. I do think some managers need to be more flexible, especially at this level.

I have seen every game so far this season. I really don’t think it is too far away but we have to be honest about the impact on the squad. We have lost a lot and we just do not have the budget to compete with other teams. Which means the long term strategy has to be to bring in and improve them.

Defensively we are struggling. I think the challenge for Carrick has to be making us hard to beat in the short term. I imagine it means dropping the number 10 role and brining in another box-to-box or CDM and we put three in front of the defense. Smith was very poor yesterday and we were very slow in getting out to them when they ran at us. That will definitely be worked on.

I totally agree on depending on the loan market but we are going to have to turn to it this year to fix some of these issues.

The big issue here is our own expectations. I know last year was exciting but we have defensive issues towards the end of the season and we lost almost all of the forward line. I think we need to accept that replacing what we lost will take 2 years of smart business and buying projects.

Don’t get me wrong though when Swift scored yesterday my stomach sank because it was such bad defending and for a second my head started to catastrophise. Some comments on what can/should change:

- we should probably go to a 433 until we recruit a no10
- Jones has to feature for me. He is by far the best at running at the opposition
- if we are trying to stretch play we need to bring the forward line a little deeper (we are not picking up on the runs in the channel anyway)
- Smith can’t be fit he really struggled but has done since Sheff Utd last season
- Lenihan is our best defender by a mile. Fry is better in a back 3. Engles, Fry, Lenihan and Van Den Berg would be our safest back 4
- Crooks is not looking happy. But he is suffering from square peg round hole stuff so far. Maybe we play him in a more comfortable midfield 3 and drop the no10.
- a forward three of any of: Jones/Forrs/Latte Lath/Silvera/McGree interchangeable

I think that would help in the meantime until we can look at the loan market.

Throwing all your eggs in the young potential basket rarely works and is a stupid dangerous path to go down a more balanced approach to recruitment was required

The play offs ain’t gone yet, it’s a long old season. But first job is get a bit of confidence, cohesion and solidity to the side before we know where we will be challenging.

Both us and Coventry where down here last season and made the play offs.
