The ‘I’ve always voted labour but I can’t this time because of x,y and z....’ line is certainly a calculated strategy to try and gently encourage others that it is ok to vote elsewhere. It’s pretty transparent but seemingly, it works on some.

Also, it's a way to say to people that "I am one of you and I have changed my mind". You are much less likely to be attacked when appealing in that way instead of starting off with clearly identifying as the opposite view.

I don’t really see the need for anybody to disclose personal voting history when replying on any topics, political or otherwise. Seems odd that some posters do, and that they do so frequently and more often than not they would appear to lean one way.

It's a function of the forum called 'reply' which allows a particular conversation between two posters to be kept separate from the other posts.
