The voice of the BORO

MISSED! More than a sitter,
Sliced blind to the cornerflag.

MISSED! More than a penna
Escaping the eyes
Of a ref needing specs.

MISSED! More than a guaranteed
Thirty goals a season
From the magic feet
Of a quicksilver demon.

MISSED! More than the memory
Of when irongates locked us out.

MISSED! More than the iron
Hewn from your hills.

Missed like your dad,
Your brother, your best mate.
Missed like an angel
Watching above the Holgate.

It wasn’t just the football club either as he loved the Boro the town the people he just loved Teesside.

I remember him telling a story on the radio about how his dad would tell him about how there were dragons in the blast furnace.

His passion for the area shone through this was his town and we were his people and he would proudly defend both.

Sorely missed listening to away games have never quite been the same since.

He truly was one of our own

He was a magnificent man, a true giant. His commentary enhanced so many of our most iconic moments. I’ll never tire of hearing his greatest hits, as per the video tribute above.

Always remember him from when him and Gordon Cox did the commentary on radio cleveland. Ali was always over the top compared to Coxy's understatement, but they worked well together. Always be remembered.

I met him once, me and my mate blagged tickets in the posh stand at Ayresome Park and decided we'd go and have a chat with him. Even though me and my mate were a right pair of scruffy oiks and he was busy getting ready for the game, he was happy to spend time talking to us and was as warm and engaging in person as we was on the radio.
