Yet another crucial game. Another tough opponent. Another challenge for the lads. Another opportunity to close that gap on second place to just one point.

What a great win at Swansea at the weekend! Another record broken. Our history of success against the Welsh side at their place made depressing reading - until the final whistle on Satda. Although we played the better football in the first half, we didnt finish off our chances and it was fortuitous for Swansea that the ball deflected into the net for their only goal. But, there is one thing about this team - since that defeat against Preston, way back on October 29th, we have show spirit and grit, even when we go behind. Michael Carrick admits its not something he encourages, but the players belief and trust in themselves has come across to us fans. Although the little "Typical Boro" man [inserted in the psychi of all Boro fans] is still there - if we go a goal down we dont automatically assume its "game over". Its been an absolute delight to watch the way the team gets back on level terms, then goes for the jugular and frequently scores another not long after. Even then, the lads arent satisfied and get back on with the job. That "hunger" and "thirst" for success, is what Michael Carrick has described as a "fire" within.

The performance of all the players was commendable. Its getting more and more difficult to chose a Man Of The Match, which shows how far we`ve come since Carrick arrived:The two "midget gems" from Villa can only be described as "mint"! Seven goals between them already! They get better every game. One compliments the other. Dragging the opposition wide. Launching away from defenders like a rocket and slotting the ball past the keeper like he wasnt there. Equally, McGree shows how he can move and create chances. Johnny Howson gets younger each week and his distribution and control is incredible. Giles! What can we say? Marcus Forss - eight goals and four assist. Crooksy - six goals and five assists in 30 appearances - many from the bench. Haydn Hackney is a revelation - from Redcar to eternity! Just give the youth a chance. Its also important to note that some of the younger academy players are forcing their way onto the bench. Saturday was important for our 17 year-old Sonny Finch: it was his professional league debut, even though it was only for the final few minutes.

Carrick said he had been training hard was worthy of his place. It gives hope and energy to all the players that their chance is there if they step up to the plate and show they want the shirt. We have to mention Chuba of course, but he and Carrick both say [rightly] his performance is part of the team. Nevertheless, 23 goals in 31 appearances is absolutely phenomenal. His nearest rival, Gyokeres, has scored less than a goal every two games. Amazing. But the chase is hotting up and we need to expect a lot more from the lads over the final ten [official] league games.

The heat is certainly on right now.
The Marathon is rapidly turning into a sprint. That gap is now down to four points [we know] and theres no-one who hasnt worked out every permutation for the possibility that Boro could be in the second Automatic Promotion (!!) place by Saturday. Without getting too nervous or over-excited, this could be the most pivotal week of our season. Its hard to stop our imagination running away with us. From twenty-first to third in one hundred and thirty three days! But, Carrick says supporters should get excited, so long as the lads remain focused on the task in hand. Stoke are having a mini-revival and we are delighted they thrashed Sunderland 5-1. But today, we ask no favours and take no prisoners. As Carrick says: "Its time to start from scratch and do it all again".
Keep calm and Carrick on.

Wednesday 17th August 2022 - EFL Championship.
[Edit]

Four games in and we were already showing signs that all was not well for our beloved club. We had started the season with a 0ne-0ne home draw against West Brom Then we travelled to QPR and crashed 3-0 by half time. We rallied by the final whistle, but it was a dreadful display - eventually losing 3-2. A 1-0 loss to Barnsley in the League Cup was followed by a respectable 2-2 draw at the Riverside against Sheffield United! It was a case of "nearly" winning the game, but not quite.

Next up: The Potters.
It was a scrappy game and Zak Steffen made some crucial saves. We werent at our best and battled to gain advantage.
Dwight Gayle ran up the pitch and crossed the ball to Jacob Brown who slotted Stoke into the lead on nineteen minutes, with Duncan Watmore equalising seven minutes before half time.

Boro started better in the second half - probing and getting balls into the box. Just after the hour mark, Paddy McNair floated a cross over from the left which saw Boro go 2-1 up. Duncan colided with Phil Jagielka in an attempt to score, but it was accredited as an own-goal. No problem. Disaster struck when D`Margio Wright-Phillips headed Stoke`s equaliser in the last minute of injury time. That meant two more points dropped for Boro and still winless in the League.

Its ironic that the Boro had 60% posession, but couldnt make it count and the team is a familiar one.
Almost all of those players are now part of the most successful campaign in recent Boro history [at the moment] - in terms of results - under Michael Carrick!

Match Preview:

* Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Sheffield United and the automatic promotion place they possess gathered steam over the weekend, with Michael Carrick’s men coming from behind to win 3-1 against Swansea whilst Sheffield United were conquered by Luton Town. Carrick said that ‘the league table doesn’t affect how we approach each game’, but supporters are certainly dreaming of an immediate return to the Premier League thanks to their remarkable revival under the former England international (W15, D1, L4).

* A dazzling run of form at the Riverside Stadium has sparked that upturn in form, with Boro winning seven straight league games on their own turf, scoring 20 goals in that time and conceding just three! Only Burnley have lost fewer games at home than Middlesbrough’s two, while no side in the division boasts a better defensive record in front of their own fans (GA: 13).

* The visit of Stoke City to Teesside is unlikely to trouble the Boro supporters, as the Potters are winless in this H2H on the road since August 1997 (D1, L5). That said, Alex Neil’s men are hitting their stride at the moment, winning four of their last six league games (L2), while they have earned more points on their travels (24) than at home this term (22).

* Stoke’s mini-resurgence continued with a 3-2 victory over Blackburn, although conceding twice in the last five minutes highlighted some vulnerabilities. Neil’s men held on, leading the Scotsman to boast ‘when we score the first goal, we’re a dangerous team’. The chances of that happening here appear slim, as the Potters have netted just one away goal in the opening 15 minutes of games this season - better only than Blackpool.

Edited highlights of the Stoke City Manager`s pre-Boro Press Conference:

Middlesbrough had a talented squad despite an indifferent start so it's been no surprise to see them climb the table?

Neil: They've got a talented squad but, to be honest, I'm surprised at the run they've been on to win 14 out of 18. That's a remarkable run. They've got good players but if you said to anyone, even Middlesbrough fans, a few weeks ago that they'd go and win 14 of the next 18, I don't think they'd believe you.

Two wins in a row, a platform for Stoke to finish as high as they possibly can, hopefully in the top half?

Neil: We spoke when we first came in about wanting to do better than we have in the last four seasons. That's still the case, that hasn't changed. The only thing a couple of wins has done is justify things I've been saying for a number of weeks. But I'm not naive to the fact that if we go and lose the next game or don't perform well it'll be the same stuff put about.
We just have to go and make sure we keep up our performance levels.

Is this Stoke's toughest test?

Neil: I would say that of all the teams we've faced in the league so far, Burnley are the best side. Middlesbrough are certainly the form team. Behind Burnley, I would say this is our toughest test

Akpom is Championship top scorer and they've won their last seven home games... so they might be due not to win one!

Neil: We're confident. I go into every game honestly believing that we can beat anyone in the league on a given day. I'm not overly concerned about the game. We've got to give them respect with the fact they're in great form, they've won seven on the bounce at home and have a good side with good players for this level. We know we're going to have to play well. I think that is straightforward.

We always talk about the importance of the first goal but Middlesbrough are very good at coming back if they concede it?

Neil: Yes, but I still think the first goal will have a big bearing on the game. They've been in an unbelievable run of form. I think some their additions in January have helped. Archer has been a great addition. That has allowed them to play Archer up through the middle and Akpom in a sort of number 10 role. It isn't as if Akpom has gone from not scoring goals to scoring all these goals while doing the same job. They've changed how they play and what they rely on from him so he's a bit freer and he drops into a 10 or 9 and a half. They've got Giles on the left side who gives them a great outlet.
We know what's coming. We've prepared for the game.

The challenge ahead

"You have to give them respect, seven wins on the bounce at home, we know we're going to have to play really well.
"I would say that in the league so far from everyone we've faced that Burnley are the best team we've come up against and Middlesbrough are the form side. Behind Burnley it's the toughest test."

A win tonight will put us just one point behind them.
A win on Saturday will see that blue line go above the red one - for the first time all season.
Come on Boro!
