* The Unofficial "Official" Middlesbrough v Blackburn Rovers. FA Cup. [01/25] Match-Day Thread *

Totally agree that no-one made any sort of case for being in the first team. McGree was particularly disappointing. McCabe was the only realy bright spark and even then you could see the difference in positivity and drive when Hackney came on.
Agree with that.
Mcgree and Burgzorg were very poor.
I thought Gilbert struggled to create anything.

Also agree that although McCabe had a really solid game, which I hoped he would and knew he was capable of, you could see how much better Hackney was when he came on. More more confident and travelled more positively with the ball.

Not just the tactics that need tweaking.

Some of the players are not good enough

For example.....Barlaser has had too many chances and is 🐎💩. Everyone knows it.

We definitely need the keeper scenario solving.....Glover was shocking today AGAIN 😡

Engels passing.......oh dear 🤷‍♂️

Hamilton & McGree.......didn't realise they were playing until they were taken off.

You'd have thought today, that they'd have been busting a gut to impress

Big problems to be solved 🤞

Without a cup run play offs are a minimum benchmark for Carrick now.
I'm not suggesting he needs promotion through them but if we don't get top six he has to go.
Far too many bang average performances, I can take that as long as the desire and effort is there, I just don't see that.
The fans and Gibson deserve better.

Our play is so formulaic when we don't strike any tempo. I'm not sure switching out players would make any lasting difference.

We do nothing to try and upset the pattern of a game when the opposition are comfortable.

I see your point, but it wouldn't do any harm to try and get in behind with the pace we've got. Allow the players to make instinctive decisions every now and again. We look overcoached, but I guess that's modern football.
Carricks style can come across as turgid at times

It’s like the “King’s new clothes”. Great passing football around our own box. 32 minutes, yes 32 minutes before we had a shot off target. Barcelona started it but they had Messi. Pep Guardiola started it in the Premier League and it worked for Man City. Now, everybody tries to play it but it is just so boring. The fans are quiet because they are “hypnotised by square passes”. They might as well have taken the goal posts down today, before kickoff. (n)

Some of the players may not be good enough but how we are setting up and our playing style are not helping anyone. Look at the goal our RB is running back trying to cut the cross out and both CB’s are facing our goal you rarely see us doing that to the other team we just slowly pass it about allowing them to get back behind the ball and organised. Tweaking the tactics will help some players no end.

Carrick really needs to up his performance as well.

Whilst I don’t like losing, I am not bothered in truth. It is not a competition we need to be distracted by or pick up injuries and cards in. Boro made many more changes I thought and whilst we were not at our best it showed we desperately need a proper goalkeeper.
I'm not against the idea of the cup being "a distraction" but as others have pointed out - there were plenty of players out there with a point to prove and they failed miserably.

We need more than a goalkeeper. We need an El-Tel style mentor with some fresh ideas. We need to start moving the ball around much quicker and being more direct.

For some reason I thought it was an evening kick off. Looks like I missed nothing, but Blackburn do seem to have sussed out, based on results.

I don’t feel McCabe did have a solid game but then no one did. We can make excuses for McCabe but not those around him. I don’t think he’s ready for the first team and would only weaken us further in the middle.

His time will come.

That's being kind. We're like watching a constipated character trying to take a crap through a drinking straw when the opposition want to frustrate and pounce on our inevitable brain farts.

Don't get me wrong, you can see we're a well coached team when things come off, but we've got to find a way to play when the opposition stops us from playing. Make things happen rather than settling for 90+ minutes of cagey probing with the ball.

Totally agree - it’s god awful but because it’s ‘Mr Michael Carrick’ he gets more leeway, just like Robson did, got too much time off Gibbo (god love him) ❤️

Honestly don't think playing him in place of barlaser would weaken us at all
I think it would be better.
He had a bit more aggression and plays with a higher tempo.
Barlaser does have those nice passes forward but he plays at walking pace for a lot of the game.

McCabe looked nice and sharp

Newcastle playing their big guns and they're pushing for top 4 and a league cup final. Showing respect to the competition and their fans.
Makes our pathetic exit with shyte second stringers even more painful.
Who does Carricknthink we are.
Still fkin gfaming at the pee weak surrender.
Pathetic.
