* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Hull Match-Day Thread *

Two poor teams tonight but good result. Would love to have seen Jones go off instead of Forss so Chuba can do the Messi role behind Forss and Muniz. (y)

Tbf thought we played better on Saturday, but there are signs we have a better shape in midfield and therefore seem a bit more solid. Maybe a few more games with a settled side and we’ll grow in confidence. Crooks might provide a bit more bite in the three just behind the main striker.
I think he lacks mobility to play where mcgree does. If mcgree could just take a breath and get hold of it he would be a better player. Hes so frustrating.

I would use crooks as the sub no.10 or striker later in the game.

They came out second half and it was inevitable they would score - that was never a free kick for our second! And the third was a deflected cross. Possession they probably bossed - we got the rub of the green for me.
If you say so, the stats don't agree. They never looked like winning at any point. We probably should have had 2 more goals too. See what you want, of course, thats your right.

Giles and McGree's shortcomings aren't a massive problem until you combine them. One or the other on the left hand side, but both is a recipe for disaster. Bullet dodged tonight.
This, McGree doesn’t give Giles anywhere near enough protection, he doesn’t help out or cover if Giles goes forwards.
We need Giles crossing ability in the team though so need to play him in midfield with Bola at left back or play a midfielder in front of him that helps to protect him.

I would stick with those playing and continue to work on it personally.

I said earlier the 3rd goal worked because of McGree drifting insider to create space for Giles.

And one of the two deep centre mids should be able to cover for this.

McGree had a nightmare today, but I still think he could be ideal for that linking position as he learns it more.

It provides two different styles on each side.

How come Christie is credited with their goal which took a massive deflection, yet Giles isn't credited with his despite it only being a slight deflection?

Thought overall we deserved the win and we looked fairly solid at the back.

McGree had a stinker, I’d be surprised if he completed more than half of his attempted passes. The only pro from him tonight was he looked gutted with himself when he was subbed as if he knew he was cr@p.

Interesting comments about whether he’s worried about picking an injury up before the World Cup, I hadn’t considered that. He definitely sh*t out of winnable tackles tonight.

Christies shot was on target, Giles was probably crossing the ball, the deflection was too close to tell if it would of been on target so they give an OG.

Score for tonight:

Steffen 7 - great save first half, distribution as good as always, one little pat down from a corner rather than a punch or catch
Smith 7 - Great ball in for Akpom, was walking a yellow card tight rope all game but kept his head
Fry 7 - not his most difficult test, they're not the sabretooth tigers, more gummy tigers.
Lenihan 8 - won every header, passed it well, good header back in for the second goal
Giles 5 - went through some terrible defensive moments in this game, he was at fault for the Christie goal, everyone knows he'll push on and drive for the box and that he's comfortable coming infield, also terrible finish when we were 4 vs 1
Hackney 7 - steady and confident on the ball
Howson 6 - added a bit of experience to the middle but didn't really shine
Jones 6 - in and out of the game, his pace troubled them but didn't get the right balls in
Akpom 9 - goal and effectively an assist for Giles 'goal', brilliant hold up play all game
McGree 6 - gave the ball away a little too often, but worked hard and kept at it
Forss 7 - The balls didn't come to him, but he worked really hard closing down, and getting close to Chuba

Pretty much agree BoroMart.
Might drop Jones half a point (if halves allowed :)).
Really don't like Giles at left-back and Jones as much of a liability as a danger at the moment.

Be interesting to see what this team looks like in a few months time.

Anyone fancy our chances tonight? I’m going for a draw but let’s see how many self inflicted errors Hull are game for!! Lol 😆
Terrific result and not to take anything away from our win but Hull are a very poor championship team. Akpom mind you was a different class, his body movement and passing was quality and really aided the team. There was some issues early in the second half but overall I think we dealt with the Hull pressure fairly easily. Good result, let's go and get three more points and goals Saturday.

I think Jones had a decent game, and provided an inch perfect cross for our second. I also think Forss deserves a lot of praise for his non stop work ethic and how he supported the midfield throughout.

Pretty bang on there.

Giles looked very patchy, not sure where he fits in to this team. His crossing is excellent but his refusal to try and beat a man means he probably isn't a left mid in 4-4-2.

McGree has qualities but again isn't a left mid. If we play 4-2-3-1 then he'd probably make a good 10. Works hard to cover yards and work ethic is excellent.

Smith is solid yet limited. Not a bad shout having him at RB seeing as we want to stop conceding soft goals. Still prefer Dijksteel there personally.

Muniz/Forss/Watmore backing up Akpom gives us decent options.

Bola should be LB all day long for me.
I thought Smith was good there's more to being a fullback than bombing forward like cafu. I also think its a bit more pragmatic to have a fullback on one side who is more defensive minded. Fry and lenihan rock sold partnership makes wilders goose chase for a leftsided third centre back look utterly ridiculous.

I think Forss did well - he’s hardly had any game time at all but he worked their back line and nearly got himself a goal at the start of the second half. I’d certainly give him another start on Saturday on that performance, and seeing as he’s our player rather than a loan like Muniz it makes sense to see what he can do

same, I'd guess he'll give these players the game time until the world cup break. We might see a change or two after, and maybe one or two frozen out for a January exit? Wouldn't be surprised to see Mowatt sacked off for a better CM and maybe a proper LB brought in
