* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Huddersfield Town. League Cup. Match-Day Thread *

Just got back from the match. First half was quite even and Huddersfield caused us problems and created some good chances. It was 4-2-3-1 formation. Payero was playing no10, just off Rogers. Second half we absolutely controlled the half and played some good stuff. Glover hardly touched the ball.

In terms of individual performances it's hard to give too much praise because they were up against 10 men so everyone had that bit more space than normal. I would say though that I thought they all played well. Silvera really does look good and was moved up top for a spell in the second half and made some great runs in behind. Rogers looked more comfortable on the left as to be expected and I do think there is more to come from him. Payero played really well - he was busting a gut to close people down and he grew into the game.
Coulson - a bit rash at times in the first half, but again improved as the game went on.
Barlaser - probably not a popular opinion on here, but he did well and I still think he will be a good player for us.
Van der Berg - mistake for the first goal aside, I thought he looked very good on the ball and has a bit of pace as well. Easy night though against 10 men.
Cartwright - looked very confident on the ball - amazing to think he is only 16. There is definitely a good player in the making with him.
Sounds like a good run out, difficult to assess the players when they're playing against 10 men, but sounds like no-one did badly.

Not sure where the idea that Barlaser is a boo boy has come from though. Some people had some criticisms of his performance on Saturday. No-one is writing him off or wanting him to do badly. He's clearly got a lot of ability and hopefully he can kick on from this game.

I had a quick scan through the Barlaser thread after the match and there were several writing him off. I really like him as a player. In a game like Saturday where we were nullified and were moving the ball too slowly, he was trying to make things happen and they werent coming off.

Edit: Here's the Barlaser thread - Not pretty reading. https://fmttmboro.com/index.php?threads/barlaser.48320/

Said it a few times and will say it again Silvera is our buy of the window. Loved him for CCM in the A League and scored the best goal in the grand a final last season.

A fair reflection on the game mate.
I despair at times when I read that clown from the Gazette’s match ratings. I’m convinced he wasn’t there last night!
I too thought Payero had a good game and was involved throughout and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. He got a 5 in the Gazette??? A 7 at least from me.

Mate, seriously. I read one short thread, and he was described as “complete sh*te”, “deadweight”, “weak”, “definitely not good enough”, and more than one poster said “get rid”. On Saturday he was unequivocally, unambiguously, without caveat, completely written off by several people.
People are entitled to their opinions but let’s not rewrite history.

You're talking about a small number of people. Most were saying it's too early to say and that it was one game. You're right in that we shouldn't rewrite history. And suggesting that the majority of the forum were slating him is rewriting history.

The lad is one of a good half-dozen who are on a steep curve, learning together. Sometimes, it seems hes actually ahead of some of his team-mates, but they will all gel and get up to speed quickly. Its like building an effective fighting - unit.

We will all be looking back by Christmas and wondering what the hell we were fretting about. Its natural for fans [dont Boro fans know it], but we have the best gaffa and coaching staff in the Championship, who will turn out some of the best players we`ve had - without paying millions for them.

Its no good comparing individual players to the likes of Giles, or Ramsey or Archer......or anyone else. Those players were a stop-gap and didnt always deliver - sometimes we can have rose-coloured spectacles - even if it was only a few months ago. Its unfair on our players. They are an honest fighting unit - growing and learning together. None of them is a "passenger" or here for "the ride". Carrick wouldnt have them were that the case. Its an insult to Carrick and his staff to suggest otherwise.

Last night, there were some good pin-point passes from the back and slide-rule interceptions. Jonesy [for instance] was more central at times - not just stuck entirely out on the wing and was a key player. Coulson appears to be sharpening his game. There are plenty of signs of green shoots and hopes for the future.

Those who dont give the lads a chance have never been children themselves or reflected on their own "growing up". Without mistakes and other issues, players dont learn the importance of "team work". The difference is that footballers dont have the time to sulk or stamp their feet. Lets give them the encouragement and get us back to competing for the top prize. Get the mistakes out the way and push on.(y)

Difficult to judge last night having only been able to listen, but from what I’ve seen in brief cameos on Saturday and against Betis we need to find a way to start Silvera. Pace was what we were lacking for much of Saturday. My way would be to either play McGree in the Giles role or push Crooks or Forss up top and play Riley in the Chuba role or alternatively play him in the Archer role.
