Boro have had some indifferent results in the League Cup over the years. Apart from our superb victory over Bolton at Cardiff in 2004, we have left the Cup in the early rounds. Perhaps its because the Cup seems to start earlier every year? Only one league match in and we travel to Huddersfield. Perhaps its because Managers consider it less important than it used to be, with regard being higher to "focus on the league". Actually, that`s a myth; every Manager from the Premiership downwards, wants their team to do as well as possible in the Cup.

Its money in the bank - especially for the lower league clubs. Its the opportunity to put the team and the club in the shop - window. The time to get on the tele and put a few more pennies in the pot. In the grand scheme of things, financially it may be somewhat down the ladder. Premiership clubs shove out "second string" teams until the final stages. The likes of Championship clubs - like Boro - use the Cup as a testing ground for youngsters and fringe players. But has it become devalued? Maybe Sky place it on their schedule equivalent of the inside back page. But for fans - we want to win it - it may be the only chance we`ve got of winning silver wear? It certainly meant something back in 2004 and it wouldnt feel any less an achievement if we won it this season. Would it?

One particularly satisfying result was beating the Deckchairs 2-1 on aggregate in 1987. After losing 1-0 at their place, Tony Mowbray and Bernie Slaven saw them off at Ayresome! That was the "Spirit of 86" side - full of energy, raw talent and passion: [Pears, Parkinson, Glover, Pallister, Cooper, Mowbray, Hamilton, Kerr, Ripley, Slaven and Stephens].

This time last year - we had a different Manager and started the season with high hopes. we faced Barnsley and lost in the 90th minute from a Josh Benson goal.

Today, we face the old dinosaur, who began his second spell at Huddersfield last season, saying "You`de have to be an idiot to come here, but I am".

We were painfully reminded of our previous Manager`s ability to fire up an ailing team last season in the league. He salvaged the Terriers from a fate worse than death and is no doubt looking forward to facing us again tonight. But Michael Carrick is not one of those coaches to take the match lightly. He`s said in previous press conferences, that winning is the aim of every game. He gave one particular reporter short shrift, when asked if he really minded losing, in order to focus on the league! He didnt ask that question again!
Michael Carrick is no stranger to League Cup Victories!

Carrick won the trophy with Manchester United in 2009, 2010 and 2017.

That victory in 2017 meant Manchester United had equaled Liverpool`s trophy tally. It was the final trophy for Michael Carrick. Next season was his final one, having made a total of 464 appearances for the Red Devils. After spells as coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer........we know what happened next.

That day we celebrated long into the night and the one after..........

Morning Roofie old man. Hope you are well.

It will be interesting to ssee what Carrick does with the team tonight. Howson may well start for a bit of fitness, but I would expect him to be replaced in the second half.

I want to see how Saturdays, largely a bit toothless display, feeds into his thinking tonight. I would like to see a strong side that he is thinking of playing on saturday to give them a run out as a team. Something we missed a bit in pre-season. He was a bit more "choppy changey" than I would have liked, particularly for the last couple of games.

We`ve definitely got the talent to give a good go. I would expect Crooks to feature - especially how Warnock likes big lads at the back. We need lads like Crooksy who can crunch in a few good tackles.(y)

We just don't play to crooksy strengths, a tactic I agree with, but it does marginalise how effective he can be. That said he would be a big help in defence for set pieces.

No chance in hell, but this would be my lineup.
Well done for the effort btw. I would swap gilbert for forss, if Jones plays. Silvera will start, of that I am sure, he showed a little on Saturday.

The big question will be, does Carrick start with the team he is going to use on Saturday to give the lads some game time as a team. It's quite early in the season and we have had a lot of changes that need time on the pitch as a unit.

If I had free reign and assuming no one's back from injury ready to start, I would go with 4-1-4-1. I would stick, largely, with players that finished against Millwall because I think the team needs to gel.

I would give RVDB a run out instead of Fry because Fry struggles with injuries. I would give Barlaser a run of games to see if he can make the grade. Simplify his role down to how it was at Rotherham. Although Coulson is a back-up, he needs a little faith shown in him. Normally you play your back-up keeper but I think we need to use as much of our first 11 as we can to build experience playing together.

The focus needs to be on pace, energy and creating options out wide as well as through the middle.

I don't know what Carrick will do. He has shown he's ruthless when he thinks a player isn't right for him (exhibit A being Muniz) but I don't know what his perspective is on why we lost against Millwall.

Town welcome Middlesbrough to the John Smith’s Stadium in the Carabao Cup
Both sides will be looking to get their 2023/24 seasons back on track after opening day defeats in the Sky Bet Championship as we temporarily turn our attention to the Carabao Cup.

While it was a loss away to Plymouth Argyle for the Terriers, visitors Middlesbrough lost at home to Millwall on the opening day despite being tipped to be one of the teams to watch this campaign.

THE OPPOSITION

Fortunes for Middlesbrough took a sharp upward turn upon the arrival of Michael Carrick as Head Coach, with the Teessiders going on an impressive run to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals last season, eventually falling to Coventry City. Despite that opening day defeat, Boro will have high hopes for the campaign ahead and Carrick will be looking to build on a record in charge that has seen him only lose 11 of his first 34 games in charge.

ONES TO WATCH

SENY DIENG

A summer arrival to Boro from Queens Park Rangers, goalkeeper Seny Dieng is in the prime of his career at 28 years old. A full Senegalese international, he played 121 times for QPR before making the move up north in the summer, building on a career that his also seen him turn out for Grasshoppers, Doncaster Rovers, Dundee and Stevenage. A dynamic presence between the sticks, Dieng has kept 56 clean sheets in 248 career games to date.

DAN BARLASER
Moving back toward his birthplace of Gateshead in January 2023 when Boro came in for the then Rotherham United man, midfielder Dan Barlaser was a priority signing for Michael Carrick in his first transfer window. A create midfielder who’s energetic on both sides of the ball, Barlaser created one goal in the 11 games he played for Boro to close the 2022/23 campaign, adding to the two goals and seven assists he’d contributed in 28 outings for Rotherham earlier that same season.

MATT CROOKS
A product of the Huddersfield Town Academy who also made the switch from Rotherham United to Middlesbrough – albeit several seasons sooner – Matt Crooks signed a new deal with Boro in the summer that will extend his stay at the Riverside to the end of the 2024/25 season. With 18 goals and nine assists to his name in 85 appearances for Middlesbrough, the tall attacking midfielder has given his side a unique and effective approach to going forward that is often difficult to defend.

RONNIE JEPSON PREVIEWS MIDDLESBROUGH (H)

1691508632148.png
Standing in for an otherwise engaged Neil Warnock, our Assistant Manager Ronnie Jepson spoke to the media ahead of our Carabao Cup First Round tie with Middlesbrough.

Providing insight into the fitness and availability of the squad ahead of our Carabao Cup campaign beginning on Tuesday 8 August 2023, Jepson was also asked about his feelings on returning to the Club and the opportunities for players on the fringes on the First Team to impress against Middlesbrough.

Speaking at the Millers Oils High Performance Complex, Jepson said:

“Matty Pearson
is okay after Saturday. He’s a little bit sore and might take a couple of days, but we’ll get him there.
1691508954375.jpeg

Tom Lees is getting there too.
1691508983768.jpeg
“The Manager wants to give a couple of other players a chance on Tuesday.

“Every team you come up against wants to win, just like we do.

“On Saturday, at 1-1, I would have been disappointed to come away with only a point. In the end, we got nothing. That’s football when you make mistakes.

“Tt’s a good football club - we want to give our best for the Club, and the fans understand that. I’m so happy to be here.

“Everyone has to keep working at it. We’ve got great fixtures coming up. There are no ‘gimmies’ in the Championship.

“The John Smith’s Stadium was rocking last season; it was incredible.

“We’ll need them to show patience at times, but it’s down to us as staff and players to get them going again.

“We’re really proud to represent these fans.

“we’ve got some young players here who have been with us all pre-season, but I only give credit when they’ve done it in this big, nasty division called the Championship!

“You can’t replicate what happens in a game in training. We set them up for it; that’s our job.

Middlesbrough is a great test - but we’ll be a tough opponent for them too.

“It’s a good one for the fans to see a few of the other players.”

Tonight`s Other Caribou Cup Fixtures:

There are some tasty fixtures tonight: Mansfield and Grimsby dislike each other intensely. Stags last beat the Mariners back in 2019 at Blundel Park back in October. Grimsby have been in and out of the EFL since then and will be relishing the scrap.
1691511250291.png
Just down the road at Meadow Lane, Notts take on Lincoln - just over 30 miles away. The Imps and Magpies have form and it will be a feisty affair. Bolton and Barrow is another close encounter - the Lancastrians will be looking to put one over the plucky Cumbrians. In their entire history, both sides have only met four times. Last out was 3-2 to Bolton in the League Cup last October, so the Bluebirds owe them one.
1691511457121.png
Elsewhere, Derby look ready to be tonked at home by Blackpool and Carlisle face a tough job at Harrogate. Sheffield Wednesday could have a battle on their hands against Stockport County - recently of the National League and managed by former pools gaffa Dave Challinor. Kyle wooton, ex Notts striker is one big unit and will be looking to find the net. Over 2000 Hatters fans will travel to Owleton Park. Stoke and West Brom sees the two Championship foes meeting for the first time this season. It will be interesting to see how they set up and whether they put out any of their first team players.

Finally, Sunlun should overcome Crewe, so Boro can beat them in a later round. No love lost here.

Weird that 7pm unique kick-off for us. We could be effectively 'out of the cup' before anyone else has even kicked off on the same night ! I don't like this possibility. Should get 3 of our lads to say to ref they have a laces crisis on their boots ( didn't bring the right colour) and at least delay to start 7.30
