According to the statisticians, it was 2001 when Boro were last goalless in their first three games of a new season.*

Last week, Michael Carrick was quizzed about how he gauged the success of the team and what he thought of the new look team so far. At that point, we had been beaten by Millwall and were to come away from Coventry empty-handed.

"The first few weeks of a season don’t always give you the true picture of what is going to end up come Christmas time and after Christmas. For many different reasons; some [clubs] are at different stages. Some have got the full squad set all summer. Some are still trying to do business. When we are ten, twelve games in, then you can start getting a picture of what the leagues looking like."
There was no hint of pessimism or dampening of his belief in the squad to compete. He acknowledged the transfer market didnt always work smoothly and sometimes patience was needed , before new players signed on the dotted line:

"I said last week before the start of the season – its a tough league. Good teams coming up, good teams that have came down. Its a challenge [big smile]. Thats why its such an entertaining league and thats why we`re looking forward to it. Every year someone says its the toughest one. Maybe it is. Maybe its not. Who knows? Its up to us to be good enough to be finishing close to the top.

I`m upbeat now! I really am. I think we`ve got some really good talent…...some good experience….within the group. I`m upbeat. I`m looking forward to the season. We just need to come out in the next few weeks in a better place than we`re going into it.

Its never easy to just go and identify who you want…...and make that happen, because there are a lot of moving parts [big smile]. We know that we`re patient to a point but we are conscious that certain things need to be done as well."

* Steve McClaren once said "In football two days is a long time and a week is a very long time" *

Thats certainly been the case for Carrick`s Boro this week: two new arrivals, a confirmed departure of last seasons Championship Top Scorer and work ongoing to bring in more players before the transfer window shuts. "We have plans. There is already work going on. We will just have to see how it pans out over the next couple of weeks [Big Smile]" Meanwhile the noise outside is deafening. Rumours? Speculation?..........

Huddersfield:
Its the chance to put right a few mistakes and start to tighten the screw. To sharpen up in attack and be ready to defend when need be. Carrick has no illusions about the task in hand, but put things in perspective when he asserted:

"I`m confident we will play better and results will turn round for sure. Two games into the season….it is what it is. Its not time to panic by any stretch."

Carrick knows Warnock by now, but wont be taking anything for granted. The team selection will be interesting. With Lukas Engel and Emmanuel Latte Lath having just dropped their bags off at Rockcliffe, the whole squad hasnt yet had a complete week to train together yet! No matter how good a player is, he has to find his feet - whether its playing at left-back or wearing the glittering No. 9 shirt.
Carrick commented in his long career as Coach, Assistant Manager and Player - there were campaigns which started poorly.......but finished with trophies, Champions League and Premier Medals. Lets bear that in mind before we all go into "melt-down".

Lets not forget the importance of supporting the Boro Lionesses this season. Sunday is the opening day of their campaign. This season will be a bench-mark in many ways. New team. New Manager. New hopes and aspirations.

The lads Under - 21`s have already kicked off [at the time of writing] with a good 2-2 draw against Forest at Meadow Lane earlier this week. If you can make any of their home or away games - its a great opportunity to see some of our talented youngsters pitted against decent opposition. There are plenty there knocking at the door to get a sniff of a chance with the first team!

As someone once said:
Its not how you start, but where you finish that matters!

Come On Boro!

* In 2001 a certain ex Assistant Coach to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, took over the helm at The Riverside. Borodid not score in the first three league games! He lead Boro into some unforgetable adventures across Europe, including the UEFA Cup Final and won us our first piece of domestic silver-wear in our history - The Carling Cup.
He was, of course, Steve McClaren. (y)

A Leadbitter penalty on 32 minutes, followed by a Ramirez rocket just a minute later and his second of the evening in the second half - gave Boro another three vital points.

With a game in hand on Burnley and a point behind them in top place - the race was really on!

The Terriers continue their start to the 2023/24 campaign on Saturday 19 August, when they travel to the Riverside Stadium to take on Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship.

Following our narrow 0-1 loss against Leicester City in our first home game of the season, Town will be looking to secure their first win of 2023/24 campaign when they travel to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough.
This will be our second meeting with Middlesbrough in just under two weeks, since we welcomed them to the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday 8 August in the Carabao Cup – which saw our visitors progress to the next round despite goals from Kian Harratt and Kyle Hudlin.

THE OPPOSITON

Middlesbrough finished fourth in the Sky Bet Championship last season and just missed out on reaching the Play-Off Final due to a 1-0 aggregate semi-final loss against Coventry City, as they finished on 75 points.
Boro are also yet to win a league game this season, after losing to both Millwall and Coventry City in the opening Sky Bet Championship fixtures.
In October 2022, Michael Carrick was appointed Head Coach of Middlesbrough who were sitting in 21st position with 17 points from 16 games – just one point above relegation zone. Carrick took them from facing a relegation battle to fighting for their place in the Premier League.

ONES TO WATCH: -

Dan Barlaser
Barlaser
joined Boro in January 2023 from Rotherham United, where he initially joined on loan from Newcastle United but joined permanently in 2020. Going through the ranks with the Magpies, Barlaser signed his professional contract in 2015 – he then had loan spells with Crewe Alexander, Accrington Stanley and finally Rotherham United. Including his loan season and his three-year stint with Rotherham United, the 26-year-old made over 130 appearances and scored 16 goals. So far this season, Barlaser has appeared in both league games and the Carabao Cup game against Town, where he assisted two out of the three goals.

Riley McGree
Australia international Riley McGree played youth football for Gawler Eagles, FFSA NTC and Adelaide United before he started his professional career with Adelaide United in 2016. His first move to English football came in 2020 when he was sent on loan to Birmingham City from Charlotte FC and this loan lasted for a season and a half before he transferred to Middlesbrough in January 2022. Since then, he has made over 50 appearances for Boro, including featuring in all three games played so far this season where he scored against Town in the Carabao Cup.

Morgan Rogers
Rogers
progressed through the youth ranks with West Brom before joining Manchester City on pro terms in August 2019 after impressing whilst playing against them in the FA Youth Cup. From then, the 21-year-old was sent on multiple loan spells, which included Lincoln City, AFC Bournemouth and Blackpool – he has also made his way through the ranks of England’s international age groups, from Under 15s to Under 20s. A new signing for Middlesbrough this summer, Rogers joined in July and has played in both league games and the Carabao Cup game against Town.

Lee Peltier goes in for a tackle on Kike.
Adam Clayton looks on.
Who is that Boro player behind him?

1692389347688.png
Jacob Butterfield making life difficult for Kike.
Never understood why we got rid of Butterfield?
He`s played for thirteen different clubs in his career.
Last seen at Scunthorpe who now play in the National League.

1692389451443.png
Tommy Smith got to the ball just before Albert.
He had his work cut out that afternoon!
Smudge began his youth career at Tranmere, progressing to Manchester City, then Huddersfield.
He signed professional with the Terriers in 2013 and went on to make 182 appearances.

1692389531572.png
Grant scores our second with a trade mark Leadbitter penalty.
John Stead looks on.
Stead played for 14 clubs in a twenty year career, including Sheffield United, Harrogate Town, Notts County, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich.

Classic Leadbitter pose after his first goal.
The best player we never bought in the last thirty years.
A Mowbray master-stroke, on a free from Ipswich.
What a footballer.
What a great servant to the football club and a great leader.
Always lead from the front on the pitch.
Now hes doing it for this generation of Boro stars. (y)

1692390167149.png

Finally. Its Adam Reach`s turn to give Tommy Smith a hard time of it!
Never thought we got the best out of Adam Reach.
Frequently played second fiddle to other regulars and never really got a good run out as a starter in the first team.
He did well at Wednesday, making 209 appearances.
Hard to believe Adam is still only 30!

I'm normally a wearer of rose tinted spectacles but I'm not liking us playing a Warnock team tomorrow, it's not good under the circumstances. We really need a result and he's the master at getting one over on former clubs.

We know Warnocks tactics, but we have the talent - particularly in terms of width and pace, which Town dont.
Town fans have commented that his tactics are predictable and boring and that he is playing his "favourite players" ahead of those more creative?.
Mmmmm.

Left field but ... I'd love to see Howson and Barlaser in the middle today, Hayden has been struggling this season, maybe just needs to get out of the firing line for a week or two.
We need to break through the typical Warnock anti-football defending.
Two in midfield could scupper their backs - who arent very quick.

However we do it, we need a win. 3 points to get our season moving.

A defeat........ ooooooffffff.

We need to be positive today, yes it’s a cliche but the season starts now

as we finally have our two key signings we’ve been lacking.
