* The Unofficial "Official"- Boro v Bristol City - Match-Day Thread *

Thought we played well for most of the game, final ball let us down in the second half and bringing Crooks on for Forss didn’t work at all, if anything it dulled out attack. You’ve got Muniz and Hoppe on the bench, they’re strikers. Crooks up front hasn’t worked for the last two managers.

Two points lost today at home.
But still a point gained.
A point may be the difference between relegation and staying up..
Another goal for Chuba Akpom which will boost his confidence.
I am feeling more optimistic than I was a few weeks back.

I assume Carrick took the job because he was promised money to spend in Jan. We need at least a good striker,if we can find one. So many shots on target but only one goal tells you all you need to know about the caliber of our strike force.
We need a right winger

Agree on Crooks being a weird sub. I know he's a physical presence, but so is Muniz.
That apart, I thought things looked very encouraging. And Hackney's been a revelation.

The best we have played in months.

Keeper made a couple of super saves - especially the second one from McGree in the first half.

McGree and Hackney were superb.

Jones was not playing well but still created 3-4 chances.

Chuba is the form striker in the league

Think they brought Crooks on to see if he could get on the end of one of the million crosses we put in and maybe alternate with Chuba.

Loads of positives.

Midfield and defence so much better than a few weeks ago.
Best we have played for a long time
MC will be very successful here

He kept going though, as he always does and I still think we're more likely to create better chances through him rather than from the left

Very unlucky to be behind.
He needs a rest and a bog standard champ right wingbackor other squad players would offer more at the moment. He needs to reset.

Played great but these are the games where our fellow crappy teams win by scoring off corners and free kicks. We still need work on these. The two free kicks from Giles and Howson at the end sums us up. Couldn’t beat the first man.
Wigan 2 goals from corners today, Birmingham score from corner, Luton a corner, Sheff Utd 2 goals from corners, WBA score from free kick. This is what this League is like every week. If only we could score more often from set pieces we would be up near the playoffs.

Yes, I did see that, but younger Boro fans possibly would not bother reading the names of a Bristol City team from 50 years ago, and even if they did, they would not have any way of knowing this chap played for the Boro. He was not mentioned in the following post which named other players who played for both, so I thought it worth mentioning.

Bizarre thing was when Pulis was in charge we were still **** at set pieces. I think a third of pulis team's goals came from set pieces. We got a handful under Pulis. If we'd scored them at his usual rate we would have been pushing for automatic.

It has been studied, and across football, 3% of corners result in a goal, with 1.5% resulting in a goal from the first touch after the corner is taken.

127 corners in the championship this weekend, so 3.8 goals would be par.

6 is obviously more than expected, but I doubt it's significantly more: 4.7% of corners resulted in a goal.

Anyone know how many we've had and scored from this season?

Thought it was a good performance full of promise, good passing, incisive passing. Just lacked a bit of quality at both ends of the pitch to win it.

Steffan - 7 - Didn't really do anything wrong all game and showed great distribution
Smith - 6 - steadyEddy, was it him that gave it away for their goal?
Fry - 8 - his best display for some time, was really dominant at stopping the break away attacks on our goal
Lenihan - 7- played well also, a partnership is forming
Giles - 6 - Got into good positions and put some good shaped crosses into good areas, it just never matched with the forwards runs. Defensively though, continues to be a weak point
Hackney - 9 - his best display for us by far, tried 92 passes and 91 were successful, and these weren't Adam Clayton passes, there were plenty of progressive ones, looked silky on the ball driving forward too
Howson - 8 - very good performance alongside Hackney, controlled the game
Jones - 5 - poor today, final ball wasn't good enough, gave the ball away too easy, too often.
Akpom - 7 - quiet first half, but excellent in teh second
McGree - 8 - creative, a goal threat, good assist and very unlucky not to get on the score sheet
Forss - 7- worked really hard leading the line, pressing, held the ball up well, and ran the channels well

Crooks - 6 - didn't really get involved in that CF role, think Carrick was hoping we got a couple of free kicks that he could attack
